The Cumberland County Historical Society's cataloging identifies them as from the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Comanche, Pawnee, and Nez Perce nations and that the photo was taken on the date of their arrival, October 22, 1883. Twenty-three male students arrived on that date from those nations.

L. D. Davis, the Superintendent of the Pawnee Boarding School, writes to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs regarding sending additional boys to the Carlisle Indian School. Davis includes a number of written requests from students asking to attend the Carlisle Indian School.
