Selections from Personnel Folder of Jennie Gaither

Date
June 2, 1909 - May 22, 1914

This folder contains documents related to Jennie Gaither's employment in the Indian Service. She worked in the Service from 1905 until approximately 1926. She worked as the matron at Carlisle from July of 1907 to January of 1913.

Documents in the first PDF include a photograph of Gaither with two young women, efficiency reports, and correspondence about her transfer to and from Carlisle. Superintendent Friedman repeatedly requested that she be transferred as he did not think her suited for the job. In some documents, government inspectors weigh in about her capabilities or well-suitedness for Carlisle in particular.

Documents in the second PDF concern a complaint Gaither levelled against the Chief Clerk of Carlisle, Siceni Nori. She alleged that he circumvented her authority when choosing a female student to have work in his home. Nori and Gaither also accused each other of swearing at the other during their argument about the matter.

Documents in the third PDF come from the Personnel Folder of Anna H. Ridenour (who replaced Gaither as Matron in 1913). They relate to the transfer of Gaither and Ridenour to their new respective positions.

The documents posted here are an excerpt of the full Official Personnel Folder. If you are interested in seeing documents relating to Gaither's work as a matron at Genoa, Phoenix, the Hope Indian School, Crow Agency boarding school, or the Pueblo Bonito school, please get in touch.
