Employee Transfer Between Schools

Anne H. Stewart requests a transfer to another position as well as her annual leave due to the Sloyd teaching position being abolished at the Carlisle Indian School.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that teacher Frances R. Scales declines the transfer offer to the Cherokee School.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that Anne H. Stewart has declined her transfer to the Fort Lapwai school. Mercer further states that he has informed Stewart that the sloyd position has been abolished at the Carlisle Indian School.

Frances A. Veitch requests transfer to another school as a seamstress before taking the clerk's examination. William A. Mercer forwards the letter along with his recommendation that her request be granted. He further states that he will provide a recommendation for her replacement in a later letter.

William A. Mercer requests action on his request to have John F. Mackey transferred to the Carlisle Indian School from his position at the Omaha Agency.

William A. Mercer responds to an Office of Indian Affairs letter regarding the transfer of Emma K. Hetrick from Tomah to Carlisle.

Clara L. Smith requests a transfer to a position closer to her home. William A. Mercer forwards the letter along with his comments about the need for her transfer.

J. R. Wise forwards Clara Smith's response to her proposed transfer to Pierre, South Dakota. Smith states that she would like to remain at the Carlisle Indian School.

Clara L. Smith responds to William A. Mercer's letter by informing him that she will take the transfer to Pierre, South Dakota if it is not convenient to re-assign her to a closer school. Mercer forwards the letter to the Office of Indian Affairs.

Mollie V. Gaither requests a transfer to the Umatilla Agency as an Assistant Superintendent if the position becomes available.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that Frances A. Veitch declines her transfer to the position of seamstress at the Sac and Fox School.

William A. Mercer requests the transfer of Olive Lambert from the Omaha Boarding School to Carlisle and for Elizabeth Sloan to be transferred to Omaha from Carlisle. Mercer also forwards Lambert's application for the matron position at Carlisle.

J. R. Wise requests the transfer of Henry Vertreace who was recently appointed as blacksmith due to his inability to read and write. Wise also cites the "natural antipathy of the Indian to the Negro, which is shared by our students here" as being another reason for the transfer.

Effie Moul requests a transfer to another school in the Indian School Service due to her health and lack of help. William A. Mercer responds to the request that he is in favor of the transfer and requests the position be filled immediately and with someone in good health and physique.

J. R. Wise requests the transfer of Cloy Montgomery from the Sac & Fox Indian School in Oklahoma to the Carlisle Indian School as a teacher. Wise includes the Montgomery's letter accepting the transfer if offered.

William A. Mercer follows up on the transfer of Henry Vertreace, blacksmith, to a position in the Indian Service that does not require educational qualifications.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that he has taken the transfer of Lydia E. Kaup from the La Pointe Agency to Carlisle under consideration.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that John S. C. Spickerman is unsatisfactory as a teacher and requests he not be retained following his probationary period. Mercer further states that Lydia E. Kaup has agreed to accept the position and requests she be transferred.

Henry Vertreace declines his transfer to the Western Shoshone Agency and notes that unless other arrangements can be that he desires to serve out his probationary period at the Carlisle Indian School.

Effie Moul follows up on her request for her transfer to a different role in the Indian School Service by requesting a promotion to teacher. William A. Mercer responds to the request of the Office of Indian Affairs for comment on the request.

Mollie V. Gaither requests a superintendent position in the Indian School Service through William A. Mercer. Mercer further comments on Gaither's request.

William A. Mercer responds to an Office of Indian Affairs letter forwarding a letter from Fanny G. Paull in which she expresses her loyalty to the Carlisle Indian School. Paull had been transferred from Carlisle to Haskell on the grounds of "disloyalty." 

J. R. Wise responds to the Office of Indian Affairs regarding Lillian B. Adams has declined the transfer to the Carlisle Indian School as an assistant matron. Wise further states that if Adams makes a new application for the transfer that Carlisle would accept it otherwise no decision should be made until William A. Mercer returns.

William A. Mercer informs the Office of Indian Affairs that Miss Macy has declined the transfer to the Carlisle Indian School. Mercer states that he has no further recommendations to fill the vacancy and requests the appointment be made from the Civil Service list.

William A. Mercer follows up on his recommendation to grant Effie G. Moul's request to transfer her and to send another assistant matron to the Carlisle Indian School in her place.
