Confiscated Postcards Sent to Carlisle Students

Date
November 21, 1913 - February 20, 1914

These materials include postcards sent to female students attending the Carlisle Indian School. These postcards were confiscated by school officials who believed that their subject matter was inappropriate for their recipients. The confiscation was done "in accordance with Section 156 of the Rules for the Indian Service." The confiscated cards were subsequently forwarded along to the office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

Sent by family and friends, most of the postcards are mass-produced illustrations, and included are many souvenirs from specific places. Their suggestive themes were common during the period and were popular among young adults.
