The Images section features photographs, postcards, and different types of artwork, as well as reproductions of images that appeared in newspapers, magazines, and other publications. These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. Visitors to this website are also invited to share copies of photographs from their own personal and family collections; please contact us if you have images you would like to contribute.

The caption reads: RICHARD DAVIS, CHEYENNE.

The printed note reads: Born 1867 at Sand Creek, Col., entered Carlisle 1879; learned the Printers' trade.  In 1888, married Nannie Aspenall, a Pawnee girl, at Carlisle, and worked for a Penna. farmer engages in raising thoroughbred stock.  He has been in charge of the School herd of 65 thoroughbred and graded animals and the Dairying until the Summer of 1894 when he was appointed District Farmer of the Cheyenne Agency.

Portrait of fifteen male students and seven female students posed on the steps of a brick building, presumably on the school grounds. They are identified in the Cumberland County Historical Society's copy of this image as being "Gros Ventres and Assiniboines, Ft. Belknap, Montana who entered Carlisle Aprl. 1890." 

Previous cataloging for this image interpreted the caption scratched onto the plate as saying that this group includes a Miss Prentiss, a teacher. We have been unable to locate any records referring to a teacher with that name and she is not mentioned in the CCHS caption. This caption also refers to the students as Assiniboine.

Studio portrait of five male students (all wearing school uniforms) and five female students. Previous cataloging interprets the caption as identifying the students as Pawnee, and naming three of them as Rose Howell, Phoebe Howell, and Ann Townsend. Rose and Phoebe were both Pawnee students. There is no student named Ann Townsend so this may actually be Sam Townsend, referring to Pawnee student Samuel Townsend.

Note: An image of this chief is included in the composite group of visiting Sioux chiefs (linked to in Related Images) but there his attached name tag identifies him as Fire Thunder. There is another individual portrait of visiting chief, and in it he is identified in his name tag as Fast Thunder but in the composite he is identified as Fire Lightning. We do not currently know which of these identifications is correct.
