In school documentation Charley White Shield's name is also spelled Charles Whiteshield.

The Cumberland County Historical Society's cataloging identifies them as from the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Comanche, Pawnee, and Nez Perce nations and that the photo was taken on the date of their arrival, October 22, 1883. Twenty-three male students arrived on that date from those nations.
