This may be a copy of a photograph taken by Choate of chiefs who visisted Carlisle.

The Cumberland County Historical Society's copy of this image identifies them as "Printer Boys." On one copy of the image they are identified as, left to right: William Butcher, Benajah Miles, Paul Boynton, Richard Davis, Samuel Townsend, Cyrus Fell Star, Chester Cornelius, Benjamin Thomas, Henry North, and Yamie Leeds. 

There are no records for a student named Cyrus Fell Star (identified as Sioux). He may be Cyrus Windy.

The handwritten caption along the side of the image is difficult to read, but we believe it says: Chester Cornelius and that that is who the sitter is.

Photograph of a photograph of Sun Chief (La-Roo-Chuk-A-La-Shur). The handwritten caption indicates he is from the Pawnee nation. 

Photographer J.N. Choate took a photograph of this image, presumably so that he could reproduce it and sell it himself. He may have taken the original, but he might not have. No other copies of this image have yet been found among the Carlisle-related images so it's possible Sun Chief was not a visitor to the school and has no connection to the school. 

The handwritten note on the reverse side reads: Max Spotted Tail. Sioux boy from Rosebud, Dakota.

This photograph originally appeared in an album that E. A. Seabrook, a teacher at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, received from his students on December 25, 1886.

Note: The caption for this image identifies the sitter only as an Arapaho chief. A name is provided in the National Anthropological Archives glass plate negative (Joalloras) and in another copy of this image from the Cumberland County Historical Society (13A-14-04) where it is either Joarclores or Joactoras. None of these names may be correct.
