Personnel Folder and Service Record Card of James Riley Wheelock

Date
July 5, 1909 - March 26, 1938

This folder contains documents related to James Riley Wheelock's employment and applications for employment in the Indian Service. It covers the second period of his employment at the Sherman Institute, Carlisle Indian School, and Genoa Indian School from 1914-1920. Then it touches on Wheelock's repeated attempts to be reinstated as a band leader, disciplinarian, or printing teacher.

The PDFs are in reverse chronological order. The first covers Wheelock's attempts to return to the Service. The second covers his time at Genoa, the third his time at Carlisle, and the fourth his time at Sherman (including his attempts to be placed at Carlisle or receive a raise). The second to last PDF covers his request to serve as the temporary band leader while Carlisle's band leader was on leave due to his role in events of the 1914 Congressional investigation at the school. The final PDF is Wheelock's service card.

Note: other records of the Carlisle Indian School show that Wheelock worked as an assistant printer and band leader at Carlisle from 1897 until at least 1902. That employment is not reflected in this folder.
