Information on Carlisle Indian School Admission Policies

State Historical Society of North Dakota Librarian and Acting Curator Georgia B. Carpenter asks the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for information regarding the Carlisle Indian School. Assistant Commissioner E. B. Meritt informs Carpenter that Carlisle is a vocational school and that its intentions to train Indian young adults "the duties and responsibilities of citizenship." The requirements for admission are that the student must be healthy, school-aged, and have completed third grade. Finally, Carlisle gets most of its students from New York and the "central western states."
