James R. Wheelock Student File

Student file of James Riley Wheelock, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1889 and ultimately departed on June 30, 1897. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, financial transactions, a photograph, returned student survey, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Wheelock was the bandmaster and assistant printer at the Carlisle Indian School for five years, was the proprietor and conductor of Wheelock's Concert Band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1907 to 1910, and the conductor of the Hagerstown Municipal Band in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1917.

In school documentation James R. Wheelock's name is also spelled James Riley Wheelock, J. R. Wheelock, James Reily Wheelock, James Rielly Wheelock, J. Riley Wheelock, and James Wheelock. He is also known as Jim Wheelock and Joseph R. Wheelock, though Joseph R. Wheelock is likely a misprint.
