Harry Kohpay (Wah-she-wah-hah) Student File

Student file of Harry Kohpay, a member of the Osage Nation, who entered the school on June 9, 1882, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on June 13, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, returned student surveys, a report after leaving, and correspondence.

The file indicates Kohpay attended the Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1893 and 1894, was assistant clerk at the Carlisle Indian School in 1894, assistant clerk at the agency and secretary of the Osage National Council or Business Committee in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1909, and was appointed as Governor of the Osage Nation in 1912.

In school documentation Harry Kohpay’s name is also spelled Harry Kohpe, Harry Kahpe, and Harry Koppay. He is also known as Wah-she-wah-hah.
