Gustavus Welch Student File

Student file of Gustavus Welch, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 22, 1908, graduated in 1912, and ultimately departed on August 5, 1915. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, photographs, an outing record, Conway Hall progress reports, financial transactions, a trade/position record card, an application for enrollment, a progress/conduct card, and correspondence.

The file indicates Welch was the caption of the 1913 Carlisle football team, an assistant football coach at the school in 1915, was attending the Dickinson Law School in 1916 and 1917, and enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the Officers Reserve Training Camp in the 10th Company at Fort Niagara, New York in 1917 eventually becoming a captain in 1918.

In school documentation Gustavus Welch's name is also spelled Gus Welch, Gus Welsh, Gust Welch, Gustave Welch, Gustavus A. Welch, Gustavus Welsh, Gustavas Welch, and Gus Welsch.
