Student file of Luther Jacobs, a member of the Lumbee Nation, who entered the school on September 7, 1911 and ultimately departed on September 3, 1917. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a course completion certificate, applications for enrollment, medical/physical records, a trade/position record card, outing records, and correspondence indicating that he was working as a plumber in Pennsylvania in 1914. He also sent the school a list of proposed students for Carlisle.
Later correspondence between Luther Jacobs and the school indicates that he was searching for employment and had taken a job with the Ford Motor Company in Michigan. In 1918 he wrote from Camp McArthur in Waco, Texas requesting the school send proof of past employment and military training. In the same letter he writes that he "was married Oct 13, 1917 [and] was called to the collars."
In school documentation Luther Jacobs is also known as Luther H. Jacobs.
Note: Members of the Lumbee Nation as recognized today were generally referred to as Cherokee Indians of Robeson County during the early 20th century, which is why the old documentation from the school identifies this student at Cherokee.
