Student file of Ernest Kick, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 13, 1904 and departed on January 12, 1905 (although an information card in the file incorrectly shows the year of departure as 1904). The file contains photographs, a student information card, a former student response postcard, a report after leaving, a returned student survey, and news clippings. The news clippings indicate that Kick was the first member of an American Indian unit to fall in action during World War I, but subsequent letters indicate that this was a misunderstanding. He was seriously injured, but survived. The file includes kick's personal account of the war and his recovery. Kick was a member of the 135th Battalion, Base Company in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada in 1916 and a Private with the First Brigade 4th Battalion Canadians B. Coy with the British Expeditionary Force in England in 1918.
Before the war, the file indicates that Kick attended the Haskell Institute in Haskell, Kansas, the Morris Indian Boarding School in Morris, Minnesota, the Tomah Indian School in Tomah, Wisconsin, and the Bethany Indian Mission school in Wittenberg, Wisconsin. Kick was also employed at various times between 1911 and 1914 as a knitter, carpenter, and farmer in Canada.
In school documentation Ernest Kick's name is also spelled Earnest Kick. He is also known as Ernest W. Kick, Ernest William Kick, Enos Kick, Enos W. Kick, and Enos William Kick.
