They are identified in the Cumberland County Historical Society's copy of this image as being "Gros Ventres and Assiniboines, Ft. Belknap, Montana who entered Carlisle Apr. 1890." This photo was likely taken in May or June of that year.
Previous cataloging for this image interpreted the caption scratched onto the plate as saying that this group includes a Miss Prentiss, a teacher. We have been unable to locate any records referring to a teacher with that name and she is not mentioned in the CCHS caption. This caption also refers to the students as Assiniboine.
