These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. The caption reads: RICHARD DAVIS, CHEYENNE.
The printed note reads: Born 1867 at Sand Creek, Col., entered Carlisle 1879; learned the Printers' trade. In 1888, married Nannie Aspenall, a Pawnee girl, at Carlisle, and worked for a Penna. farmer engages in raising thoroughbred stock. He has been in charge of the School herd of 65 thoroughbred and graded animals and the Dairying until the Summer of 1894 when he was appointed District Farmer of the Cheyenne Agency.

Previous cataloging for this image interprets part of the caption scratched on the plate as giving a date of 1897.

Cameo photographs of seventeen Sioux chiefs, all of whom visited the school in mid-February 1891 and presumably had these portrait photos taken by John N. Choate. The grouping is titled "Noted Indians" and has a copyright date of 1891. Each chief is identified by a white tag applied to his lapel. They are identified as:
