Descriptive Statement of Pupils from Pine Ridge Agency, 1879

Date
September 23-24, 1879

Descriptive Statement of young people recruited for the Carlisle Indian School from Pine Ridge Agency, as prepared by the acting Indian Agent for Pine Ridge J. W. Alder. Of the 27 names on this list, only 18 ultimately traveled to Carlisle, the parents perhaps having changed their minds about sending their children. The names of the other 9 do not appear on the list of first students prepared by Richard Henry Pratt in early November, nor are there any student files or cards for any of them, as there are for all other enrolled students.

The names of those on this form who did not come to Carlisle are Robert Randall, Sungmauitu Wankumtuya (High Wolf), Ota Kutepe (Shoots Plenty), Mary Randall, Millie, Opagila (Fills the Pipe), Gi wila (Yellow Woman), Mazaska (Money), and Sofie.
