The Documents section features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

Personnel file of Nellie Robertson Denny, who served as the Clerk of the Carlisle Indian School from 1900 to 1912 and from 1914 to 1918. She also served as Outing Manager for the Carlisle Indian School from 1908 to 1912. Robertson Denny was a graduate of Carlisle's class of 1890, and was married to Wallace Denny.

The file contains quarterly employee reports, letters of resignation, employment applications, and employment-related correspondence.

Personnel file of Wallace Denny, who served as Assistant Disciplinarian of the Carlisle Indian School from sometime before 1910 until 1918. Denny was a member of Carlisle's class of 1906, and was married to Nellie Robertson Denny.

The file contains quarterly employee reports, letters of resignation, complaints from students, a photograph of Denny, and employment-related correspondence.

Date: June 24, 1910 - October 19, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Raymond Kennedy to be released from the Carlisle Indian School in order to continue with his machinist trade in one of Carlisle's outing districts. Kennedy's request was denied, but he was given the ability to access his money held at Carlisle.

Also included in the file is correspondence regarding changes being made at the Chilocco and Haskell Schools in admitting members of the Five Civilized Tribes of Oklahoma.

Request for Enrollment by Antonio Florez

Date: June 24, 1910 - July 6, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request from Antonio Florez to enroll at the Carlisle Indian School. Florez was informed that he should consider enrolling at a closer school to his home and should make direct contact with the superintendent of the school.

Request for Enrollment of Harold Bishop

Date: July 5, 1910 - August 27, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Ida Logan to enroll her son Harold Bishop to the Carlisle Indian School. Bishop was under the standard age of enrollment. The Indian Office allowed Bishop's admission pending the status of his formal application.

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Joe Welch to be admitted to the Carlisle Indian School to obtain an education in industrial arts. Welch was informed that as a member of the Chickasaw Nation he could only attend Carlisle by paying tuition but that he could attend Haskell Institute without paying tuition.

Complaints By Mrs. E. A. Pierce Against Wallace Denny

Date: July 12, 1910 - October 21, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding the forced return of Seneca Clark Cook by Carlisle's disciplinarian, Wallace Denny. Cook's grandmother, Mrs. E. A. Pierce, wrote to the Indian Office complaining about the treatment of her grandson by the school, including specific complaints against Denny's treatment of students.

Notice of Death of Wallace Berryman

Date: July 13-18, 1910

These materials include correspondence reporting the death of Wallace Berryman. Berryman was admitted to the school hospital in early June and was later sent to the German Hospital in Philadelphia for surgery. Following Berryman's death he was interred at the school cemetery.

Request for Enrollment of Daughter of Hattie Williams

Date: July 15-25, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request from Hattie Williams to enroll her daughter at the Carlisle Indian School. The Indian Office replied that Williams should consider applying to the Sherman Institute in Riverside, California.

Request for Enrollment of Children of Jackson Ellis

Date: July 24, 1910 - September 21, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Jackson Ellis to have his children enrolled at the Carlisle Indian School. As Ellis lived in Marble City, Oklahoma and was a member of the Cherokee Nation, his children were not eligible for government assistance. Instead, Ellis was directed to apply to the Haskell Institute where four of his children were enrolled.

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Florence Pennel to have the minimum age requirement of attending the Carlisle Indian School waived for a younger brother on account of two other siblings attending school. The Indian Office waived the requirement pending the applications.

Request for Enrollment of Cutler Children

Date: August 11, 1910 - September 20, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Rosa Monroe to have the children of Jacob Cuttler enrolled at the Carlisle Indian School. As two of the children were under the minimum age of enrollment permission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs was needed. Permission was granted with the exception that transportation of the two underage children would not be provided by the government.

Request by Bertha Manatoua to Pursue Nursing Training

Date: August 14, 1910 - September 16, 1910

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Bertha Manatoua to take up nursing training at the Carlisle Indian School without corresponding academic work. Due to her age, she required permission from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Permission was granted, pending approval of her application by Superintendent Moses Friedman. Friedman was encouraged by the Commissioner to have Manatoua also pursue academic training while at Carlisle.

These materials include correspondence regarding a request to enroll Robert Newcomb as a non-Indian pupil. Newcomb was required to pay tuition, as members of the Cherokee Nation were ineligible for government-funded education.
