Anne Ely Photograph Album in U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center Digital Collections

The Anne Ely photograph collection consists of an album of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (CIIS). The album contains 38 cardboard leaves of medium thickness with one, or more albumen photographs attached to each side of the leaf. These images are some of the earliest images of the Indian school. Over 316 Indian students are identified by name in the album as well as their associated tribes. There are also 31 CIIS staff members identified. This album is of great public interest and is often requested for research, which is why it was selected for conservation, all of the leaves in the album were reattached and the pages were cleaned. The leaves were digitized, preserved on archival gold DVDs and printed to make a surrogate book. Anne Ely was a teacher and later a school administrator who coordinated the outing system, where students lived and worked with host families for extended periods of time.
