These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Bertha Manatoua to take up nursing training at the Carlisle Indian School without corresponding academic work. Due to her age, she required permission from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Permission was granted, pending approval of her application by Superintendent Moses Friedman. Friedman was encouraged by the Commissioner to have Manatoua also pursue academic training while at Carlisle.
