The Images section features photographs, postcards, and different types of artwork, as well as reproductions of images that appeared in newspapers, magazines, and other publications. These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. Visitors to this website are also invited to share copies of photographs from their own personal and family collections; please contact us if you have images you would like to contribute.

Portrait of male students with brass instruments and drums posed on the steps of a school building. The very large drum in the center has "Indian Industrial School. Carlisle, PA." on it. 

Previous cataloging says that the image is dated November 1893.

This image appears in United States Indian School Carlisle, Penna (Carlisle, PA: The School, [1895?]), p. 35. In this brochure the caption reads:

"THE SCHOOL BAND.

In 1880 a benevolent lady of Boston presented the school with a set of band instruments. Under its present leader, a graduate of the School, it has a recognized place among the good bands of the country, and has performed acceptably before critical audiences in our large cities, notably at the parades in New York and Chicago during the Clumbian Quadra-Centennial."

Portrait of the 1894 football team. Bejamin Caswell, the captain of the team, is in the center holding a football with "94" painted on it.  

In The Red Man vol. 12 no 7 (Sept. Oct. Nov., 1894) this image was included as a supplement and the players identified. The caption for this photo was written at a later date in ink. This caption identifies them as "H. Morrison and George Warren." There are no records for a student with that last name of Morrison with a first name starting with H. Based on comparison with other photographs we believe he is Daniel Morrison. The student on right does appear to be student George Warren.

Students must be fairly well advanced in their school work before they can enter the printing office.

Studio portrait of ten unidentified male students in school uniforms. 

Previous cataloging identifies the students as from the Flathead or Salish nation and provides a date of January 189[?]. A group of Flathead students arrived in November 1893, so this is probably that group, taken in January 1894.
