These images all reflect the Carlisle Indian School students, facilities, and staff. Images available here are drawn from files housed at the U. S. National Archives, from collections of Carlisle Indian School materials housed at various archival repositories, and from a variety of published sources. The caption identifies them as the student group the What-so-ever Circle. The National Anthrpological Archives copy of this image also identifies the name of the group, and also the white woman as Miss Shaffner, and provides a date of October 1892.
The What-So-Evers were a "circle" or a subgroup of the female student group the King's Daughters. Miss Lillie Ruth Shaffner was a teacher at the school in 1892 and was identified in the school newspapers as the leader of the What-So-Evers.
