This folder includes documents related to George Foulk's employment at the Carlisle Barracks after the Carlisle Indian School closed.
Having worked as a teamster at the Carlisle Indian School from April 1, 1882 until the school closed in September of 1918, Foulk continued to work as a laborer and teamster at the Carlisle Barracks for the War Department Medical Department. Documents in this file indicate that he stayed while General Hospital No. 31 was open (from October 16, 1918 until June 30, 1920) and after the Medical Field Service School opened (on July 1, 1920). The War Department removed him from the employee rolls on April 30, 1922. He had retired.
Arranged in roughly reverse chronological order, most of the documents in this folder focus on negotiating for Foulk's retirement benefits. War Department staff discuss what Foulk's job title should be (labourer versus teamster) which had implications on whether he was eligible for retirement benefits. There is also correspondence about giving Foulk a raise later on in the folder.
Note: The official personnel folder for George Foulk's service with the Department of the Interior was requested from the National Archives in St. Louis, but a staff member indicated that Foulk's "Interior personnel file was charged out in 2006 and not returned to file. We were able to locate a Bureau of Indian Affairs service record card for Mr. Foulk which indicated that he transferred to the War Department." This material is his personnel file for the War Department.
