Appointment of William Stimpel as Disciplinarian

Date
September 6 - December 19, 1907

These materials include correspondence, legal documents, and an Executive Order regarding the appointment of William Stimpel as Disciplinarian for the Large Boys Quarters of the Carlisle Indian School. The position had been temporarily filled by numerous teachers and recent graduates without satisfaction, so Stimple was requested by Superintendent William A. Mercer after a call to Army regiment commanders for an experienced former non-commissioned officer. An Executive Order from President Theodore Roosevelt and special military discharge instructions were required for Stimple's appointment.

Note: The surnames Stimple, Stemple, Stimpel, and Stempel are used interchangeably, and it is not clear which is correct.
