System of Savings for Carlisle Indian School Students

December 16, 1889

Richard Henry Pratt responds to an Office of Indian Affairs letter which enclosed a letter from W. B. Backus, Superintendent of the Genoa School, in reference to a system of savings for students. Pratt notes that he believes he fills the place of a parent for the students at the Carlisle Indian School, that he considered teaching students about money a part of his parental duties, and that he considered his authority supreme. Pratt also encloses samples of various forms related to the system of savings for students including requests to purchase various items that must be approved by him as well as the account book of Frank Jannies.
