Commissioner of Indian Affairs Ezra A. Hayt's letter to Richard Henry Pratt communicating that it is unnecessary to recruit more children from the Pine Ridge Agency to attend the Carlisle Indian School. Hayt says that he does not think it best to take more young people from their home at present time. Hayt also lets Pratt know that he instructed Indian Agent William H. Whiteman from the Ponca Agency to select three Ponca and two Nez Perce children to be sent to Carlisle Indian School with parental consent. Pratt is to meet Whiteman in Winfield and take charge of the five young people. Hayt also informs Pratt that James E. Rhoades and the Orthodox Friends are interested in sending two Absentee Shawnee boys to the Hampton Institute. Hayt states that the Friends are willing to pay for their travel expenses and that Mr. Beard is to meet with Pratt at Winfield, Oklahoma City, to deliver the boys to Pratt. Pratt would then be responsible for ensuring the boys are transported to the Hampton Institute for education.
