The Documents section features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

Correspondence Regarding 1914 Congressional Investigation

Date: May 4, 1914 - October 25, 1918

These materials include correspondence and legal documents regarding the 1914 internal and Congressional investigations into Superintendent Moses Friedman and Chief Clerk Siceni J. Nori of the Carlisle Indian School. Included is copied and original correspondence regarding the resignation of Friedman and Nori, legal discussions regarding further action by the Department of Justice, subpoenas and requests for testimony for the Congressional hearings, memos regarding the findings of the investigations, attempts by Friedman and his supporters to undercut Nori and Chief Inspector E. B. Linnen, and discussions regarding Friedman's accounts and investigations by the Treasury Department.

These files were apparently copied and sent to the Treasury Department by the Auditor for the Department of the Interior a few years after the investigations. They were returned to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, explaining their presence in the National Archives correspondence files for that agency.

C. E. Cahel complains to the Bureau of Indian Affairs that students attending the Hogansburg Indian School were being prevented from applying to the Carlisle Indian School. Cahel claims that Hogansburg school officials refused to sign students' application forms for Carlisle.

A delegation of four Carlisle Indian School students attended the conference, and adopted resolutions "for the betterment, elevating and promoting Christian fellowship of the Indian Race."

Request to Alter Admission Policy for Oklahoma Nations

Date: July 28, 1914 - May 3, 1915

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Superintendent Oscar H. Lipps to change admission rules for students from the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma. Prior to Lipps request, students from these Nations were required to pay both tuition and transportation. The revision allowed students with financial need to attend Carlisle by only paying for their transportation.

Request for Guidance on New Vacation Request Policy

Date: August 7-25, 1914

These materials include correspondence and a government document regarding a new policy for vacation requests. Superintendent Oscar H. Lipps notes that, because the Circular outlining the policy was received late, some students did not fill out the necessary Vacation Request Form. Lipps requests clarification on how to handle the case of Delia Denny, who had returned home on vacation, intended not to return to Carlisle due to circumstances at home, and was requesting the deposit she had left to cover her return transportation. Lipps also sought guidance on additional cases which might arise.

A copy of a blank Vacation Request Form is included in this correspondence. The form discusses how money will be handled when students on vacation fail to return to school.

Request for Enrollment of Winona Isabell Jordan

Date: August 11-20, 1914

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Louisa Jordan to enroll her daughter Winona Isabell Jordan at the Carlisle Indian School to learn the dressmaking trade. The request is denied, and Jordan is recommended to enroll her daughter in public schools until she is the appropriate age to attend Carlisle.

Request for Information about the Carlisle Indian School by Abendschule

Date: August 12, 1914 - May 4, 1926

This material includes a request the Louis Lange Publishing Company, publishers of the German magazine Abendschule, for information about the history of the Carlisle Indian School. This information, along with a list of further readings and some photographs, were supplied by the Assistant Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

Also included in this correspondence is a request from 1914 for pages missing out of the Advance Statement of Annual Report for 1914. These were likely incorrectly filed with this record.

Request to Enroll Kempton Children
