Student file of Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, who entered the school on February 6, 1904 and ultimately departed on February 1, 1913. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a progress/conduct card, a student information card, letters, financial transactions, photographs, and news clippings from various publications, including the Sherman Bulletin of the Sherman Indian School in Riverside, California. The file also notes that some documents have gone missing over the years, necessitating the copying of the file for public access.
Thorpe became famous internationally as an athlete while at Carlisle, and went on to have careers in both professional baseball and football. He competed in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and won gold in the Decathlon and Pentathlon. Thorpe was considered by many to be "The World's Greatest Athlete" and is one of the most famous graduates of the Carlisle Indian School.
In school documentation Jim Thorpe's name is also spelled Jim Thorp. He is also known as James Thorpe.
