Student Files

The Student Files section of the website features digitized copies of paper records on individual students at the school. These records were maintained by the administrative offices at the school during its years of operation. A variety of personal information about each student may be found within these files, including family background, age, height and weight. Files may also include information about admission and dates of attendance, outings, health, school activities, and life after separation from the school. A guide to the types of documents typically found among these files can be found here. Today these records are preserved at the U. S. National Archives within Record Group 75, Entry numbers 1327 through 1330.

Student file of Charles Oheltoint, a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on September 10, 1879, and departed on June 29, 1880.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating that Oheltoint was farming in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1914.

Note: Oheltoint also goes by the name Charley Buffalo in the record.

Robert American Horse (Cut Ears) Student File

Student file of Robert American Horse (Cut Ears), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on June 14, 1887. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, a report after leaving, a returned student survey and a news clipping. The file indicates American Horse stockman in Manderson, South Dakota in 1910 and a farmer in Kyle, South Dakota in 1912.

Note: In a letter describing the first students to enter the school, Pratt refers to this student as Makpaksa and Cut Ears.

Student file of Paul Black Bear (Makes Himself Run), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on July 6, 1888. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards and a report after leaving indicating that he was living in Allen, South Dakota in 1910.
