An excerpt from the Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs to the Secretary of the Interior for the fiscal year ending 1878, containing reports on the Indians at the Hampton Institute and a report by Lieut. Richard Henry Pratt regarding the recruitment of students for that school. Both reports discuss the education of students at the Hampton Institute under Samuel Chapman Armstrong, and Pratt's involvement with student recruitment.

A hand-written note in the margins mistakenly claims that this report discusses the arrival of Luther Standing Bear at the Carlisle Indian School, which was not founded until the following year.
