The Documents section features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

Request for Enrollment of Thomas Canadian Family

Date: October 27, 1913 - October 29, 1915

These materials include correspondence regarding requests by Congressman Asher C. Hinds of Maine to enroll at Carlisle the three children of Thomas Canadian. The oldest daughter was forwarded an enrollment application and notified that she would have to pay her own costs. The two youngest children were directed to enroll at the Thomas Indian School in New York.

Complaint by Mamie Vilcan

Date: November 2, 1913 - January 2, 1914

These materials include correspondence regarding a complaint made by Mamie Vilcan that Anna Ridenour, Matron, was opening her mail. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs asked Superintendent Friedman to look into the affair, and later reiterated that officials should abide by the law while supporting the actions of the School.

Confiscated Postcards Sent to Carlisle Students

Date: November 21, 1913 - February 20, 1914

These materials include postcards sent to female students attending the Carlisle Indian School. These postcards were confiscated by school officials who believed that their subject matter was inappropriate for their recipients. The confiscation was done "in accordance with Section 156 of the Rules for the Indian Service." The confiscated cards were subsequently forwarded along to the office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

Sent by family and friends, most of the postcards are mass-produced illustrations, and included are many souvenirs from specific places. Their suggestive themes were common during the period and were popular among young adults.

Correspondence Regarding Morris Huff

These materials include correspondence regarding a disagreement between Morris Huff and Carlisle's outing authorities regarding his enrollment status at the school. Huff was living with his outing family while no longer a student, and the school objected this arrangement and sought to have Huff reenroll.

Brief of Charges and Answers Against Superintendent Moses Friedman

Date: December 1, 1913 - May 1, 1914

These materials include legal documents and correspondence regarding charges filed against Superintendent Moses Friedman after an inspection and investigation of the Carlisle Indian School. Included in the documents are the official charges against Friedman, his answers to those charges, correspondence regarding the charges, and the recommendation to have the case tried by a Congressional joint committee.

These records cover both the lead-up to and the follow-up from the 1914 Congressional Investigation hearings. They are presented at the National Archives in an approximately reverse chronological order from their date of creation, as reflected here.

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Charles A. Peters to be returned home in order to help his parents. This request was granted upon the condition that Peters pay for his own transportation.

These materials include correspondence regarding a request to enroll the Wa-co-che family at Carlisle. The request was denied, as the family had sufficient means to afford their own education and because some members of the family were over Carlisle's maximum enrollment age.

Complaint by Louis Schweigman

Date: December 31, 1913 - January 27, 1914

These materials contain correspondence regarding the return of Louis Schweigman to his home. Schweigman complained that he was returned to his home without warning. Superintendent Moses Friedman denied the claim, and noted Schweigman's temporary enrollment status. Friedman also complained to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs the Principal Teacher John Whitwell had lost interest in the school, and was a poor influence on both teachers and students.

Date: February 14, 1914

These materials include a draft and final letter to Oscar Hiram Lipps, Supervisor in Charge of the Carlisle Indian School, regarding a new form, Form 5-249, for method reporting. The letter also explains new reporting procedures regarding enrollment and outing students.

Conway Hall Tuition for Gus Welch

Date: February 25, 1914 - March 5, 1914

These materials include correspondence regarding a request by Gus Welch to have the Athletic Association pay the remainder of his tuition at Conway Hall. Internal notes in the materials suggest that Carlisle's administrators did not want to honor the request, despite receiving permission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Request for Enrollment for Wilbur and Rupert Anderson

Date: February 25, 1914 - March 9, 1914

These materials include correspondence regarding a request to enroll Wilbur and Rupert Anderson, children of Collins Anderson from Browning, Montana. Both children were below the required minimum age to enroll in a non-reservation school, but the request was granted contingent upon Anderson paying for their transportation.
