The Documents section features digitized copies of documents relating to the history of the school.  These documents include correspondence, graduation pamphlets, and other forms of ephemera, and have been digitized by Digital Resource Center staff.  Today, these documents are preserved in a number of locations, including the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections as well as private collections.

Costs of Pupils at School vs Outing

Date: December 2, 1916

These materials include correspondence responding to a request for data comparing the costs of pupils who remain at the school versus those who are outing. Superintendent Lipps includes a copy of the July 1916 Carlisle Arrow that includes a statistical Outing Report for the fiscal year ending June 1916.

Inquiry into Alice Tebbitts

This material includes correspondence between Alberta B. Doyle of the Bureau of Plant Industry in the Department of Agriculture, and Mr. Hawke, the chief clerk of the Indian Bureau. Doyle inquired about the lineage of former student Alice Tebbitts.

Request to Enroll Mexican Students Attending Carlisle

Date: December 31, 1916 - January 10, 1917

These materials include correspondence regarding the education of Mexican students at the Carlisle Indian School. Commissioner Sells' responds that Carlisle is not academically advanced but meant to train students in industrial arts. Further authority from Congress would have to made to have students from Mexico attend Carlisle.

Materials About Sarah Boyd Assault Incident

Date: January 25, 1917 - February 10, 1917

This material includes an inquiry into the alleged physical assault of Sarah Boyd by matron Matilda G. Ewing. Boyd claimed that she was pushed down a flight of stairs by Ewing, resulting in a back injury. The materials include an interview transcript with Boyd, letters from witnesses, and Boyd's recanting of her accusation.

Suggested Use of Carlisle Indian School as Military Post

Date: March 23, 1917 - April 18, 1917

These materials include correspondence regarding a suggestion by local Carlisle resident Irvin Mahon that the Carlisle Indian School be returned to use as a regular military post during the First World War. This suggestion is rejected by Commissioner of Indian Affairs Cato Sells.

Request for Clarification Regarding Student Enlistment

Date: April 4 - 7, 1917

These materials include correspondence regarding a request for clarification from Superintendent John Francis Jr. on how to handle students wishing to enlist in the United States Army and Navy in response from hearing from a Naval recruiting officer. Francis was informed that he should not oppose any eligible student from enlisting and those from the senior class should be given a special examination in order to graduate on the spot.

1917 Commencement Program, The Continental Congress

Date: May 23, 1917

This program was distributed for a performance by the students as part of the Commencement Exercises for 1917. The play, "The Continental Congress," is taken from McBrien's "America First," and the school borrowed the costumes for the performance. It surrounds the formation of the first Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence.
