Leila Cornelius Student File

Student file of Leila Cornelius, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on March 23, 1888, graduated in 1896, and ultimately departed on July 6, 1897. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, returned student surveys, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Cornelius graduated from the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1897, was an assistant teacher at Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1907 and a housewife in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1909, 1911, and 1913.

Note: This file originally contained the student information card for another student; Delila Cornelius. The card has since been moved to the correct file; NARA_1327_RG 75_Series 1327_box 44_folder 2167.

Student information card of Leila Cornelius, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on March 23, 1888 and departed on July 6, 1897. The information card indicates that Cornelius had graduated in 1896, married fellow student Benjamin Caswell, and was living in Leech Lake in 1914.

Benjamin Caswell Student File

Student file of Benjamin Caswell, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1889, graduated in 1892, and ultimately departed on June 10, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a trade/position record card, photographs, a financial transaction, news clippings, returned student surveys, former student response surveys, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates Caswell was the first captain of the Carlisle football team in 1892, attended the Dickinson College Prepatory School, was principal teacher in charge of the Cass Lake Indian School in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1907, superintendent of the Cass Lake Indian School and Special Distribution Agent in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1909, and overseer on timber matters in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1912.

Note: Caswell married fellow student Leila Cornelius.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, a document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Benjamin F. Caswell. That document has now been included with the Benjamin F. Caswell file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 123_folder_4941.

Student information card of Benjamin Caswell, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1889 and departed on June 10, 1895. The information card indicates that Caswell had graduated in 1892, studied carpentry, married fellow student Leila Cornelius, and was living in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1913.

Delila Cornelius Student File

Student file of Delila Cornelius (spelled DeLeila on one card; apparently having confused with Leila at first), a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 19, 1895 and departed on July 1, 1898. The file contains a student information card and a report after leaving indicating Cornelius was living in Callaway, Minnesota in 1913.

Note: A document related to Delila Cornelius was originally found in the folder of another student; Leila Cornelius, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 135_folder 5300.
