Jonah Sonday (Shwanadosa) Student File

Student file of Jonah Sonday (Shwanadosa), a member of the Ottawa Nation, who entered the school on September 19, 1894 and departed on September 20, 1900. The file contains a student information card, news clippings, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Sonday was working for the Indian Service at Genoa, Nebraska in 1910 and for the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1917.

Student file of Joseph Schuyler, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 29, 1894, and departed on September 18, 1900.  The file contains a student information card, a newspaper clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that Schuyler was working as a steamfitter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1911.

Phineas Wheelock Student File

Student file of Phineas Wheelock, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 29, 1894, and ultimately departed on August 31, 1904. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Wheelock was working as a musician in 1910, touring with the North American Indian Band in Europe in 1911, and living in Yardley, Pennsylvania in 1912.

Electa Metoxen Student File

Student file of Electa Metoxen, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 29, 1894, and ultimately departed on June 23, 1908. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a former student response postcard, news clippings, correspondence between Electa and the school in which she writes about the many places she has lived, her husband's occupation, and her children. The file also contains a report after leaving indicating that in 1917 she was living in Wagner, South Dakota.

Note: In this file the student's name appears as Electa Metoxen, Electra Metoxen, and Electre Metoxen. She writes back to the school under her married name Electa Metoxen Hare.

James Taogoa Kowice Student File

Student file of James Taogoa Kowice, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 18, 1894 and ultimately departed on June 23, 1909. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a trade/position card, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Kowice was working for a lumber company in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1910, a farmer in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1911 and was working as a storekeeper in Gallup, New Mexico in 1912.

Note: The file indicates that the student first entered the school as James Kary Taogoa with one living parent. When he reentered the school in 1904 both parents were deceased and George Kowice Analla (a former Carlisle student) is listed as his home address. His name is also changed to James Taogoa Kowice.  In George's file, he refers to James as his brother.

Frank Tyndall Student File

Student file of Frank Tyndall, a member of the Omaha Nation, who entered the school on October 20, 1894, and departed on July 6, 1898. The file contains a student information card, correspondence related to school publications and former students attending commencement in Carlisle, a returned student survey, a news clipping, and a report after leaving that indicates Tyndall was a farmer in Macy, Nebraska in 1912.

Kendall Paul Student File

Student file of Kendall Paul, a member of the Alaskan (Tlingit) nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1894, graduated in 1899, and departed on June 10, 1900. The file contains correspondence, a news clipping, a returned student survey, student information cards, and a report after leaving indicating he was in New York City in 1914.

Note: The student writes back to the school using two names with similar frequency, both Kendall Paul, and Samuel K. Paul.

Harold Parker Compiled Sources

Compiled sources of information for Harold Parker, a member of the Comanche Nation, who entered the school on November 8, 1894 and departed on October 18, 1900. No student file or information cards have been found for Harold Parker, but other sources of information show that he was enrolled at Carlisle, including a listing of the group of students with whom he entered, his name in an admissions ledger, several outings, a few mentions in the Indian Helper newspaper, and his discharge listings (once to visit home in 1897, and later to leave the school entirely).

Clarence Butler Student File

Student file of Clarence Butler, a member of the Coeur d'Alene Nation, who entered the school on February 7, 1895, graduated in 1898, and departed on March 16, 1898. The file contains a student information card, returned student surveys, former student response postcards, a news clipping, a report after leaving, photographs, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Butler was an electrician and steam engineer in Browning, Montana in 1907 and was working in real estate and farming in St. Maries, Idaho in 1913.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as Clarence Butler and Clarence Boutelier.

Nellie Valenzuela Student File

Student file of Nellie Valenzuela, a member of the Papago Nation, who entered the school on February 25, 1895 and departed on June 26, 1900. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, news clippings, and a report after leaving indicating Valenzuela was working as an assistant matron in Phoenix Arizona in 1910.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as Nellie Valenzuela and Nellie Valenzuella.

Albert H. Nash Student File

Student file of Albert H. Nash, a member of the Winnebago Nation, who entered the school on March 5, 1895, graduated in 1897, and departed some time in 1897. The file contains newspaper clippings, a photograph, letters/correspondence, a former student response postcard, financial transactions, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1907 Nash married Edna T. Renton and held various jobs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania including salesman and an office worker. The files indicate that while at Carlisle, Nash was a long distance runner.

Edgar Rickard Student File

Student file of Edgar Rickard, a member of the Tuscarora Nation, who entered the school on March 19, 1895 and ultimately gradued in 1901, and departed on March 19, 1901. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, returned student surveys, a news clipping, a photograph, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates that Rickard worked in the printing office in Mount Vernon, Kentucky after graduating, was a farmer in Lewiston, New York from 1907 to 1911, was elected to the position of secretary in the Tuscarora Nation in 1912, and was sent to Washington D. C. by the Tuscarora Nation to settle a deal in 1912 while living in Lewiston, New York. Rickard was married to fellow student Lulu Coates.

Russell Whitebear Student File

Student file of Russell Whitebear, a member of the Crow Nation, who entered the school on May 31, 1895, and departed on April 24, 1899.  The file contains a student information card, newspaper clippings, and a report after leaving indicating that Whitebear was living in Crow Agency, Montana, in 1910.

Luzenia Tibbetts Student File

Student file of Luzenia Tibbetts, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on June 23, 1895, graduated in 1901, and departed on August 31, 1904. The file contains a news clipping, a student information card, a report after leaving, returned student response surveys, a letter/correspondence, and former student response postcards. The file indicates that Tibbetts attended the Bloomsburg State Normal School in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania starting in 1902 and graduating in 1904, was a teacher at the Carlisle Indian School in 1904 and 1905, and was a housekeeper in Bena, Minnesota in 1913.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Luzenia Tibbetts, Luzena Tibbetts, and Zenia Tibbett.

Student file of Levi Willis, a member of the Ottawa Nation, who entered the school on August 23, 1895 and departed on June 28, 1900. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, and a report after leaving that indicates Willis was working as a tailor in Boyne City, Michigan in 1910.

Ida Swallow Student File

Student file of Ida Swallow, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on August 28, 1895, graduated in 1901, and departed on June 30, 1902. The file contains a student information card, returned student surveys, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates that Swallow graduated from the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1902, was an assistant clerk at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennyslvania from 1902 to 1905, was a bookkeeper, clerk and store manager in Oelrichs, South Dakota in 1907, and living in Harviell, Missouri in 1915.

Andrew Knife Student File

Student file of Andrew Knife, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the School on September 1, 1895 and departed on July 5, 1898. The file contains a student information card, letters/correspondence, a news clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Knife was a night watchman at the Ogala Boarding School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota in 1910 and was working with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show in 1910.

Frank Jones Student File

Student file of Frank Jones, a member of the Sac & Fox Nation, who entered the school on September 7, 1895 and departed on March 18, 1897. The file contains a student information card, letters/correspondence, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, a report after leaving, and news clippings. The file indicates Jones attended the Haskell Institute Normal Department in Lawrence, Kansas in 1898 and the Ft. Smith Commercial College in 1903, was a manger of the Yukon Mill and Grain Company in Yukon, Oklahoma in 1909 and 1910, and was a sales manager at the Oklahoma City Mill in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1913.

Note: In the file the student is also referred to as Frank O. Jones and Francis O. Jones.

George W. Bent Student File

Student file of George W. Bent, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 8, 1895, and departed on March 4, 1896.  The file contains a student information card, a position card, former student response postcards, a returned student survey, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a report after leaving indicating that he was living in both South Dakota and Nebraska between 1910 and 1915, working as an Indian school disciplinarian, forest guard, and bankmaster.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National archives, a document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Alva Blanchard Christian. That document has now been included with the Alva Blanchard Christian file: NARA_Series 1327_box 6_folder 234.

Frank Cajune Student File

Student file of Frank Cajune, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 13, 1895, and departed on July 5, 1897. The file contains a student information card, a newspaper clipping, correspondence, a position card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The files indicate that Frank Cajune was working in Real Estate in 1910 in Mahnomen, Minnesota.

Note: Cajune married fellow student Julia van Wert and was the father of student Frances Cajune. Some of the correspondence in this file concerns Frank Cajune's attempts to enroll his daughter Frances Cajune at the school.
