Judson Bertrand Student File

Student file of Judson Bertrand, a member of the Pottawatomi Nation, who entered the school on August 21, 1903 and ultimately departed on January 23, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains an application for enrollment, student information cards, a progress/conduct card, a medical/physical record, letters/correspondence, a former student response postcard, a returned student survey, news clippings, an outing record, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates that Bertrand was living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania while working in mechanical dentistry at A. H. Knauff Dental Depot and Laboratory in 1911, was the manager and partner of the dental firm Hood and Bertrand in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1914, and was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I in 1918.

Note: Students Judson Bertrand and Laura Bertrand were siblings.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a financial transaction, student information cards, an application for enrollment, a physical record, a returned student survey, a progress/conduct card, a news clipping, former student response cards, a report after leaving, and an essay that Weeks wrote as a senior. According to the file, William Weeks worked in a printing office after working on a farm.

Note: Although this file shows Gros Ventre, a member of the Fort Berthold community has indicated that this individual is actually Hidatsa.

Paul A. White Student File

Student file of Paul A. White, a member of the Alaskan Nation, who entered the school from September 3, 1903 and departed on June 26, 1908. The file contains student information cards, a trade/position card, letters, a returned student survey, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving. The file indicates White was working as a carpenter and a musician while in Hoonah, Alaska in 1912.

Note: The student in this file is identified as as Paul C. White and Paul A. White.

The file indicates that Walton was a clerk in Tacoma, Washington and a student at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington in 1910, and was working as a clerk in Sitka, Alaska in 1911.

The file contains a student information card, an application for enrollment, a news clipping, a progress/conduct card, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates that Sequoyah was a farm hand in Morrisville, Pennsylvania in 1911, worked in New Jersey after leaving school, and was living in Stonery, North Carolina in 1915.

Note: Students James Billings and Minnie Billings were siblings. Peter Billings (who enrolled in 1902) may be their brother.

Alvin Kennedy Student File

Student file of Alvin Kennedy, a member of the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on November 20, 1903, graduated in 1911, and ultimately departed on July 7, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains newspaper clippings, student information cards, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, a former student response card, letters/correspondence, a progress/conduct card, a trade/position record card, a report after leaving, an outing record, and a photograph. The file indicates Kennedy began working at Gettysburg Junction in 1908, then enlisted in the Navy in 1911 and worked on the U.S.S. Jenkins as a radiotelegraphy operator in Arlington, Virginia.

Note: Other records indicate Kennedy married former student Mary A. Bailey.

The file indicates Friday was a foreman at the Royal Oak Farm in Topeka, Kansas in 1913 and a farmer in Wind River, Wyoming in 1914.

Rosetta Pierce (Da-ga-nade-yohse) Student File

Student file of Rosetta Pierce (Da-ga-nade-yohse), a member of the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on November 23, 1903, and ultimately departed on May 18, 1912. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, student outing records, a progress/conduct card, an application for enrollment, medical/physical records, newspaper clippings, outing evaluations, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Pierce was married to Thomas Owl at the home of Superintendent Moses Friedman and was living in Birdtown, North Carolina in 1912.

Note: in this file the student is identified as Rosetta Pierce and Rose Pierce.

Garfield Sitarangok Student File

Student file of Garfield Sitarangok, a member of the Alaskan (Eskimo) Nation, who entered the school on November 23, 1903 and departed on May 25, 1908. The file indicates Sitarangok was a clerk in a store in Council, Alaska in 1911 and 1914.

The file indicates Gates was a farmer in Fort Yates, North Dakota in 1913.

James Thorpe Student File

Student file of James (Jim) Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, who entered the school on February 6, 1904 and ultimately departed on February 1, 1913. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a progress/conduct card, a student information card, letters, financial transactions, photographs, and news clippings from various publications, including the Sherman Bulletin of the Sherman Indian School in Riverside, California.  The file also notes that some documents have gone missing over the years, necessitating the copying of the file for public access.

Thorpe became famous internationally as an athlete while at Carlisle, and went on to have careers in both professional baseball and football. He competed in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and won gold in the Decathlon and Pentathlon. Thorpe was considered by many to be "The World's Greatest Athlete" and is one of the most famous graduates of the Carlisle Indian School.

Note: In the file the student is identified as both James Thorpe and Jim Thorpe.

Levi Hill Student File

Student file of Levi Hill, a member of the Onondaga Nation, who entered the school on February 17, 1904, graduated in 1910, and ultimately departed on June 12, 1912. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains an outing record, a trade/position record card, news clippings, a returned student survey, progress/conduct cards, medical/physical records, student information cards, and an application for enrollment. The file indicates that upon graduating Hill moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania where he worked in his trade of bricklaying.

Note: The student is identified as Levi Hill and Levi Hillman.

James Hears the Wind Student File

Student file of James Hears the Wind, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on March 14, 1904 and departed on June 23, 1909. The file contains a student information card, medical/physical record, a returned student survey, correspondences, a trade/position record card, a progress/conduct card, a news clipping and a report after leaving indicating that he was a farmer in Grosse, South Dakota in 1910.

Note: After leaving the school, the student went by the name James H. Winde.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file indicates that Goesback was living in Fort Washakie, Wyoming in 1911, working as an interpreter and a coach at the Wind River School in Wind River, Wyoming in 1911 and as a disciplinarian in Flandreau, South Dakota in 1914 and 1915.

Charles Driskell Student File

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file indicates Driskell was working as a laborer on irrigation works in Fort Washakie, Wyoming in 1911.
