Harry Kohpay (Wah-she-wah-hah) Student File

Student file of Harry Kohpay (Wah-she-wah-hah), a member of the Osage Nation, who entered the school on June 9, 1882, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on June 13, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, returned student surveys, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Kohpay attended the Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1893 and 1894, was assistant clerk at the Carlisle Indian School in 1894, assistant clerk at the agency and secretary of the Osage National Council or Business Committee in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1909, and was appointed as Governor of the Osage Nation in 1912.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Harry Kohpay. Those documents have now been included with the Harry Kohpay file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 147_folder 5669.

Note: Other records show that Kohpay originally enrolled at the school on June 9, 1882. This card reflects his re-enrollment.

The file indicates Standing Bear was a shipping clerk for Sears Roebuck Co. in Chicago, Illinois in 1910, a show man in Belvidere, South Dakota in 1911, and was living in Wanblee, South Dakota in 1916.

The file contains a student information cards, returned student surveys, a letter/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Powlas attended the Milwaukee Medical College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was a physician in Oneida, Wisconsin in 1907, and was in charge of the agency and hospital in Oneida, Wisconsin in 1910 and 1911.

Martin Archiquette Student File

Student file of Martin D. Archiquette, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1885, graduated in 1891, and departed on October 8, 1893. The file contains former student response postcards, a trade/position record card, a student information card, a photograph, a news clipping, returned student surveys, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Archiquette was a disciplinarian and band leader at the Indian School in Fort Simcoe, Washington in 1907 and 1910, overseer of Indian employment at Rocky Ford, Colorado, and superintendent of Grand Portage, Minnesota in 1915.

Levi St. Cyr Student File

Student file of Levi St. Cyr, a member of the Winnebago Nation, who entered the school on August 5, 1887, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on June 30, 1893. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains photographs, student information cards, returned student surveys, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates St. Cyr was a member of the band at Carlisle, an assistant printer and foreman at the Carlisle Indian School from 1891 to 1899, an assistant clerk and acting interpreter at the Winnebago Indian Agency in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1907, leasing clerk at the Winnebago Agency in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1910, and was appointed overseer of Indian Employment at Garden City, Kansas.

Student file of Charles E. Dagenett, a member of the Peoria Nation, who entered the school on November 15, 1887, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on December 14, 1891. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, photographs, returned student surveys, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Dagenett attended Dickinson College in 1891; graduated from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York; was the Supervisor of Indian Employment in Denver, Colorado in 1910; executive committee chairman of the American Indian Association in 1911; and was the Supervisor of Indian Employment at the Indian Office in Washington, D. C. in 1915.

Note: Dagenett married fellow student Esther Miller.

The information card indicates that Dagenett had graduated in 1891, married fellow student Esther Miller, studied printing, and was living in Washington, D. C. in 1914.
