Sarah Smith Student File

Student file of Sarah Smith, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on June 22, 1888, graduated in 1897, and ultimately departed on September 29, 1898. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, returned student surveys, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Smith graduated from the Carlisle Commercial College in 1899, was the librarian at the Carlisle Indian School from 1897 to 1901, and keeping her own house in Oneida, Wisconsin in 1907, 1910, and 1913.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as Sarah Smith and Sara Smith.

Sarah Ninham Student Information Card

Student information card of Sarah (here Sara) Ninham, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on June 30, 1888 and departed on July 2, 1891.

Note: Although this card shows a departure date of July 21, that is an error. Sarah actually departed on July 2, according to various other documents.

Note: Nelson Smith was Sarah's second husband. Her first husband was John Antone, and their children Gertrude and Christjohn Antone attended Carlisle in later years.

Note: The student is referred to as both Sarah and Sara throughout the file.

Note: Students Christjohn and Gertrude Antone were siblings, and their mother, identified as Sarah A. Smith, was former student Sarah Ninham.

Student information card of Christjohn Antone, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on November 23, 1910 and departed on December 2, 1913. The file indicates Antone was living in Oneida, Wisconsin in 1913.

Note: Students Christjohn and Gertrude Antone were siblings, and their mother, identified at Sarah A. Smith, was former student Sarah Ninham.
