Anonymous Criticism of Government

Date: May 2, 1917

Carlisle Indian School Superintendent John Francis Jr. receives an anonymous post card with "reflections against the foreign policy of the Government." As the United States is involved in World War I, Francis forwards it to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

1917 Commencement Program, The Continental Congress

Date: May 23, 1917

This program was distributed for a performance by the students as part of the Commencement Exercises for 1917. The play, "The Continental Congress," is taken from McBrien's "America First," and the school borrowed the costumes for the performance. It surrounds the formation of the first Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence.

Blacksmithing Industrial Training Information

This material includes information regarding the industrial training program in blacksmithing at Carlisle, including detailed lesson plans designed to prepare students for making automobiles in the Ford Motors Corporation program. Additional information on students at Ford and those who had completed the Ford course is provided.

Investing Carlisle Athletic Association and Restaurant Funds

Date: June 7-12, 1917

Carlisle Indian School Superintendent John Francis Jr. informs the Commissioner of Indian Affairs that the Carlisle Athletic Association has $4,000 and the restaurant has nearly $1,000. He states that because these are "independent corporations," money from these two sources does not come directly to the superintendent and is instead deposited directly into banks. He asks the Commissioner for permission to invest most of the money into the Liberty Loan at a higher interest rate than that of the banks'. 

Assistant Commissioner E. B. Meritt gives Francis permission to invest the funds in liberty bonds if he has approval from the Athletic Association.

Installation of Three Compartment Refrigerator

Date: June 16, 1917 - June 23, 1917

Carlisle Indian School Director of Mechanic Arts Roy H. Bradley informs Superintendent John Francis Jr. that John R. Livezey completed building and installing a three compartment refrigerator at the school. Francis Jr. forwards Bradley's letter to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and requests to pay Livesey $600, which was the agreed upon fee. Assistant Commissioner E. B. Meritt grants permission and First Assistant Secretary Alexander T. Vogelsang approves.
