Nellie Robertson Student File

Student file of Nellie Robertson, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880 and ultimately departed on July 2, 1896. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a photograph, news clippings, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Robertson graduated from the West Chester Normal School in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1896, was a teacher for four years at the Carlisle Indian School, a clerk in the Carlisle Indian School in 1907, the outing manager at the Carlisle Indian School in 1911, and was still working at the school in 1918.

Reginald Oshkosh (Ahguinimy Neopit) Student File

The student file of Reginald Oshkosh (Ahguinimy Neopit), a member of the Menominee Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880 and departed on June 17, 1884. The file contains a returned student survey, a report after leaving, letters/correspondence. The file indicates Oshkosh was an employment agent and assistant manager for the Menominee Logging Manufacturing operation in 1910 in Keshena, Wisconsin and was a foreman for the Menominee Indian Mills in Neopit, Wisconsin in 1913.

Note: Oshkosh states that he is one of the first students to attend the Carlisle Indian School. Many of the documents in his file relate to the education of his children.

Ellis Childers Student File

Student file of Ellis Childers, a member of the Creek Nation, who entered the school on January 22, 1881 and departed on June 17, 1884. The file contains a student information card, a newspaper clipping from the Sherman Institute, letters/correspondence, financial transactions, and legal documents regarding Childers' departure date from Carlisle. The file indicates Childers was the Speaker of the House Warriors of the Creek Nation in 1914.

Harvey D. Warner Student File

Student file of Harvey D. Warner, a member of the Omaha Nation, who entered the school on August 19, 1882 and ultimately departed on March 28, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a news clipping, a report after leaving, letters/correspondence related to financial transactions and Warner's son, Charles, attending the school, and a returned student survey that indicates Warner was a postmaster in Macy, Nebraska in 1911.

Student file of Adelia Lowe, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 30, 1882 and departed on March 6, 1896. The file contains student information cards, returned student surveys, a financial transaction, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Lowe was housekeeping in Porcupine, South Dakota in 1909.

Frank Jannies Student File

Student file of Frank Jannies, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 14, 1883, and departed on July 8, 1889. The file contains a student information card, a photograph, correspondence related to financial transactions, enrolling other children as students at Carlisle as well as attending the commencement exercises at Carlisle, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, and a former student response postcard indicating that Jannies was a farmer and stock raiser in Winner, South Dakota in 1914. Jannies also served in the United States Army.

Note: In this file the student's surname is identified as Jannies, Janies, and Jannis.

Justin Head (Rat Head) Student File

Student file of Justin Head, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on February 2, 1884 and departed on March 1, 1892. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, land grants, parole records, an outing evaluation, letters/correspondence concerning Head's parole, a trade/position record card, a medical/physical record, financial transactions, newspaper clippings, a Senate resolution, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Head was living in Florence, Arizona in 1911 and living in Trenton, New Jersey in 1915.

Note: At the time of scanning in the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this folder seemed to relate to a different student, Henry Herrara. Those documents have now been included in the Henry Herrera file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 107_folder 4523.

Elizabeth Wind (Ro-nea-we-ia) Student File

Student file of Elizabeth Wind (Ro-nea-we-ia), a member of the Wyandotte Nation, who entered the school on September 16, 1885 and departed on January 10, 1895. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, a trade/position record card, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Wind graduated from the M. E. Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1894, was an assistant nurse the Carlisle Indian School for two years, and an assistant nurse at the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon for two years. Wind then worked as a housekeeper and a private nurse in Wichita, Kansas in 1911, an assistant matron at the Phoenix Indian School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1913 and 1914, and a nurse in Ship Rock, New Mexico.

Frank Hudson Student File

Student file of Frank Hudson, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 3, 1886, graduated in 1896, and departed on March 31, 1897. The file contains news clippings, a trade/position record card, a student information card, financial transactions, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Hudson was a quarterback and kicker on the Carlisle football team as well as being a captain on the basketball and baseball teams, a financial clerk at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was farming on shares in Wycombe, Pennsylvania in 1911, and was in the advertising business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917.

Lucy Cloud Student File

Student file of Lucy Cloud, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on August 7, 1889 and ultimately departed on December 16, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a former student response postcard, a returned student survey, letters/correspondence, financial transactions, and a report after leaving indicating Cloud was working as a dressmaker as well as a housewife in Bay City, Michigan in 1913.

Student file of Mary Jane Silas, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on August 8, 1889 and ultimately departed on June 21, 1894. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence, and financial transactions.

James Riley Wheelock Student File

Student file of James Riley Wheelock, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1889 and ultimately departed on June 30, 1897. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, financial transactions, a photograph, returned student survey, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Wheelock was the bandmaster and assistant printer at the Carlisle Indian School for five years, was the proprietor and conductor of Wheelock's Concert Band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1907 to 1910, and the conductor of the Hagerstown Municipal Band in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1917.

Benjamin Caswell Student File

Student file of Benjamin Caswell, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1889, graduated in 1892, and ultimately departed on June 10, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a trade/position record card, photographs, a financial transaction, news clippings, returned student surveys, former student response surveys, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates Caswell was the first captain of the Carlisle football team in 1892, attended the Dickinson College Prepatory School, was principal teacher in charge of the Cass Lake Indian School in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1907, superintendent of the Cass Lake Indian School and Special Distribution Agent in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1909, and overseer on timber matters in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1912.

Note: Caswell married fellow student Leila Cornelius.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, a document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Benjamin F. Caswell. That document has now been included with the Benjamin F. Caswell file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 123_folder_4941.

The file indicates Gesis got married at Carlisle and was a housewife in Irving, New York from 1907 to 1911.

Edward Davis Student File

Student file of Edward Davis, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 15, 1889 and departed on July 4, 1893. The file contains a student information card, photographs of Davis' barber shop, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, newspaper clippings, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that, from 1910 to 1913, Davis was working as a barber in Alma, Michigan.

Malcolm Clark (Ah-nah-mak-ka) Student File

Student file of Malcolm Clark (Ah-nah-mak-ka), a member of the Piegan Nation, who entered the school on January 4, 1890, graduated in 1893, and ultimately departed on June 6, 1894. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, returned student surveys, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, a financial transaction, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Clark attended the Dickinson College Preparatory School (Conway Hall) in 1894, graduated from the Valparaiso Business College in Valparaiso, Indiana, was cattle raising in Browning, Montana in 1907, and ranching in Browning, Montana in 1909 and 1913.

Samuel S. Davis Student File

Student file of Samuel S. Davis, a member of the Crow Nation, who entered the school on March 31, 1890, and departed on October 10, 1890.  The file contains a student information card, former student response postcards, a returned student survey, financial correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating that, from 1911 to 1914, Davis was working in Lodge Grass, Montana.

Minnie M. Yandell Student File

Student file of Minnie M. Yandell, a member of the Bannock Nation, who entered the school on August 17, 1890 and departed on March 14, 1894. The file contains a student information card, letters/correspondence, returned student surveys, a financial transaction, and a letters/correspondence. The file indicates Yandell attended Vashon College in Vashon, Washington; was a teacher in the Indian Service at Fort Hall, Idaho, Fort Lapwai, Idaho, and Round Valley, California between 1894 and 1897; and was keeping her house in Ross Fork, Idaho in 1907, 1909, and 1911.

Stephen Reuben Student File

Student file of Stephen Reuben, a member of the Nez Perce Nation, who entered the school on September 7, 1890 and departed on June 27, 1893. The file contains a student information card, a report after leaving, letters/correspondence about Reuben's family and work after leaving the school, news clippings, a financial transaction, photographs, a program from the Second Annual Camp Meeting of the M. E. Church South at Lapwai, Idaho in 1912, and former student response postcards. The file indicates Reuben was a farmer in Webb, Idaho in 1916 and living in Webb, Idaho in 1918.

Emily Peake Student File

Student file of Emily Peake, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 23, 1890 and departed on March 6, 1893. The file contains a student information card, returned student surveys, financial transactions, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Peake attended the State Normal School at Winona, Minnesota, kept roomers in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1907, keeping house for family in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1909, and was the secretary of Carlisle Alumni Association working at the Indian Office in Washington, D. C. in 1918.

Alice Lambert Student File

Student file of Alice Lambert, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on August 27, 1892 and departed on March 6, 1895. The file contains a student information card, financial transactions, a former student response postcard, returned student surveys, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Lambert was a housewife in Ogema, Minnesota in 1907, 1909, and 1913.

Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat) Student File

Student file of Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat), a member of the Piegan Nation, who entered the school on March 2, 1893 and ultimately departed on February 8, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains letters/correspondence, an outing record, a progress/conduct card, an application for enrollment, trade/position cards, student information cards, a medical/physical record, a photograph, and a report after leaving.

The report after leaving indicates that Jerome was a laborer Cut Bank, Montana in 1911. Correspondence between Jerome and the school then shows his residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913 and his marriage to former Carlisle student Miss Fannie Charley. Lastly, correspondence between the school and Kennerly family including Jerome indicates that Jerome was a soldier serving on the S.S. Tuscania when it was sunk by the Germans in 1918. Jerome survived and ended up in England with the 158th Aero Squadron.

James B. Driver (Goliath Bigjim) Student File

Student file of James B. Driver, a member of the Cherokee Nation. No entrance or departure dates are given. The file contains letters/correspondence, photographs, a newspaper clipping, a trade/position record card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Driver was on the track and field team at Carlisle in 1900, 1901, 1902, and 1903, owned a bakery in Derry Church, Pennsylvania (Hershey, Pennsylvania) in 1910, was living in Derry Church, Pennsylvania in 1912, and continued to own his own bakery in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1914.

Note: While attending the school, Driver went by the name Goliath Bigjim (or one of several variations of that name). Under that name there are records that indicate he entered the school on June 10, 1894 and ultimately departed on August 19, 1903.

Albert H. Nash Student File

Student file of Albert H. Nash, a member of the Winnebago Nation, who entered the school on March 5, 1895 and departed some time in 1897. The file contains newspaper clippings, a photograph, letters/correspondence, a former student response postcard, financial transactions, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1907 Nash married Edna T. Renton and held various jobs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania including salesman and an office worker. The files indicate that while at Carlisle, Nash was a long distance runner.

Abel Cannot Student File

Student file of Abel Cannot, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1895 and departed on June 26, 1900. The file contains a student information card, a returned student file, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Cannot was a farmer in Robbinsville, North Carolina in 1910 and a farmer in Cherokee, North Carolina in 1914.
