Edgar Fire Thunder Student File

Student file of Edgar Fire Thunder, a member of the Sioux nation, who enetered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed the school on October 21, 1884. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a student information card, a letter, a trade position/record card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Fire Thunder was an assistant farmer in the Indian Service and a ranchman in Allen, South Dakota in 1911.

Robert American Horse (Cut Ears) Student File

Student file of Robert American Horse (Cut Ears), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on June 14, 1887. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, a report after leaving, a returned student survey and a news clipping. The file indicates American Horse stockman in Manderson, South Dakota in 1910 and a farmer in Kyle, South Dakota in 1912.

Note: In a letter describing the first students to enter the school, Pratt refers to this student as Makpaksa and Cut Ears.

Student file of Frank Everett, a member of the Wichita Nation, who entered the school on April 3, 1880, graduated in 1892, and departed on January 3, 1893. The file contains a student information card, a trade record card, a returned student survey, correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1911 Everett was farming in Anadarko, Oklahoma.

Alfrich Heap-of-Birds Student File

Student file of Alfrich Heap-of-Birds. No entrance or departure information is given, and no Nation is given. The file contains a newspaper clipping, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating Heap-of-Birds was farming in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1910.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Alfrich Heap-of-Birds, Alfred Heap-of-Birds, and Alfred Clyde.

Note: Information in other records shows Heap-of-Birds was a member of the Cheynne nation who arrived on September 6, 1880 and departed on September 18, 1883.

Michael Burns Student File

Student file of Michael Burns, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on October 26, 1880, and departed on October 6, 1884.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a position card, a returned student survey, correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that Burns was working as a farmer in McDowell, Arizona, from 1914 to 1915.  The records also indicate that, in 1910, Burns was a student in the Riverside School of Riverside, California.

Joseph Harris Student File

Student file of Joseph Harris, a member of the Gros Ventre Nation, who entered the school on April 2, 1881, graduated in 1889, and departed on July 16, 1892. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, former student response postcards, a report after leaving, returned student surveys, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Harris attended the Middletown Township in 1890, worked at the Carlisle Indian School and the Genoa Indian School in Genoa, Nebraska as a printer, and was a farm laborer in Langhorne, Pennsylvania in 1912 and 1913.

William B. Peery Student File

Student file of William B. Peery, a member of the Peoria Nation, who entered the school on December 20, 1881 and departed on July 1, 1882. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, correspondence, a returned student survey, a position record card, and a report after leaving that indicates Peery was working as a farmer and deputy assistant in Peoria, Oklahoma in 1913.

Levi Levering Student File

Student file of Levi Levering, a member of the Omaha Nation, who entered the school on August 19, 1882 and ultimately departed on July 2, 1891. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, returned student surveys, a former student response postcard, a report after leaving, a trade/position record card, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Levering attended Bellevue College in Nebraska, was a teacher in the Indian Service for ten years, an Indian trader in Macy, Nebraska in 1907 and 1910, and the Superintendent of the Muyaka Boarding School in Beggs, Oklahoma in 1912.

Nellie Aspenall Student File

Student file of Nellie Aspenall, a member of the Pawnee Nation, who entered the school on August 31, 1882 and departed on June 30, 1891. The file contains a student information card, a position record card, and a report after leaving indicating Aspenall was a housewife living in King Fisher, Oklahoma in 1910. 

Note: Aspenall married fellow student Richard Davis in 1888, while both were still students. This is why she is known in some documentation as Mrs. Nellie Aspenall Davis.

The file contains a student information card, correspondence, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates Norcross was working as a farmer in Fort Defiance, Arizona in 1910.

Charles S. Damon Student File

Student file of Charles S. Damon, a member of the Navajo Nation, who entered the school on October 21, 1882, and departed on July 2, 1891. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates Damon was working as a stockraiser in Fort Defiance, Arizona in 1914.

Stacy Matlock Student File

Student file of Stacy Matlock, a member of the Pawnee Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1883, graduated in 1890, and ultimately departed on May 18, 1892. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, a trade and position card, a report after leaving, and newspaper clippings indicating that Stacy Matlock, who had played football at the school, was a Pawnee Chief. The file also contains letters and correspondence between Matlock and the school regarding his daughter Cecelia and other Pawnee children at the school. 

Note: In this file, the student's name appears both as Stacy Matlack and Stacy Matlock, but family members have indicated that Matlock is the correct spelling.

Note: Matlock married student Ella Manchief, and subsequently another student, Blanche Bill, after Manchief's death. He was also the father of student Cecelia Matlock.

Benajah Miles Student File

Student file of Benajah Miles, a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on October 22, 1883, graduated in 1892, and departed on July 22, 1892. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, a letter/correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Miles was in the Indian Service as an assistant blacksmith in 1907 in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1907, an additional farmer in El Reno, Oklahoma in 1910, and an additional farmer in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1911.

Frank Jannies Student File

Student file of Frank Jannies, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 14, 1883, and departed on July 8, 1889. The file contains a student information card, a photograph, correspondence related to financial transactions, enrolling other children as students at Carlisle as well as attending the commencement exercises at Carlisle, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, and a former student response postcard indicating that Jannies was a farmer and stock raiser in Winner, South Dakota in 1914. Jannies also served in the United States Army.

Note: In this file the student's surname is identified as Jannies, Janies, and Jannis.

Justin Head (Rat Head) Student File

Student file of Justin Head, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on February 2, 1884 and departed on March 1, 1892. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, land grants, parole records, an outing evaluation, letters/correspondence concerning Head's parole, a trade/position record card, a medical/physical record, financial transactions, newspaper clippings, a Senate resolution, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Head was living in Florence, Arizona in 1911 and living in Trenton, New Jersey in 1915.

Note: At the time of scanning in the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this folder seemed to relate to a different student, Henry Herrara. Those documents have now been included in the Henry Herrera file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 107_folder 4523.

Student file of Charles Martin, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on February 11, 1884, and departed on June 14, 1887.  The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, a position card, and a report after leaving indicating that Martin was working as a Blacksmith in Beaulieu, Minnesota, from 1910 to 1913.

Student file of Willie H. Paisano, a member of the Queres Nation, who entered the school on August 24, 1884, and departed on June 28, 1886. The file contains a student information card, correspondence, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a news clipping, and former student response postcards that indicate Paisano was working as a postmaster and a dealer in general merchandise in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1912.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file indicates Leeds was a stock raiser and farmer in Seama, New Mexico in 1907, a pottery worker in Laguna, New Mexico in 1910, and was farming and raising stock in Seama, New Mexico in 1912.

Student file of Kish Hawkins, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 3, 1884, graduated in 1889, and ultimately departed on April 2, 1891. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a former student response postcards, a trade/position record card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Hawkins was a farmer in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1907 and was an assistant Indian farmer in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in 1913.

Joseph Cotter Student File

Student file of Joseph Cotter, a member of the Wyandotte Nation, who entered the school on September 16, 1885 and departed on July 6, 1888. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, letter/correspondence, a former student response postcard, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey. The file indicates Cotter was raising stock and farming in Wyandotte, Oklahoma in 1911 and was a farmer and blacksmith in Wyandotte, Oklahoma in 1913.

Note: White attending the school Cotter seems to have been called Joseph. After leaving, he identifies himself as Joel A. Cotter.

Elizabeth Wind (Ro-nea-we-ia) Student File

Student file of Elizabeth Wind (Ro-nea-we-ia), a member of the Wyandotte Nation, who entered the school on September 16, 1885 and departed on January 10, 1895. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, a trade/position record card, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Wind graduated from the M. E. Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1894, was an assistant nurse the Carlisle Indian School for two years, and an assistant nurse at the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon for two years. Wind then worked as a housekeeper and a private nurse in Wichita, Kansas in 1911, an assistant matron at the Phoenix Indian School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1913 and 1914, and a nurse in Ship Rock, New Mexico.

The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, and letters and corresdence from the school asking her to respond with a letter about her experience on outings. This file also contains a report after leaving indicating she was working as a teacher and living in Oneida, Wisconsin, in 1910.

Peter J. Powlas Student File

Student file of Peter J. Powlas, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 30, 1885 and departed on June 27, 1887. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, and his business card that indicates Powlas attended the Haskell Institute in Kansas after attending Carlisle, married Ida F. Clayton, worked as a notary public and real estate agent in West DePere, Wisconsin and had three children.
