Louis Bayhylle Student File

James Taogoa Kowice Student File

Student file of James Taogoa Kowice, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 18, 1884 and ultimately departed on June 23, 1909. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a trade/position card, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Kowice was working for a lumber company in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1910, a farmer in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1911 and was working as a storekeeper in Gallup, New Mexico in 1912.

Note: The file indicates that the student first entered the school as James Kary Taogoa with one living parent. When he reentered the school in 1904 both parents were deceased and George Kowice Analla (a former Carlisle student) is listed as his home address. His name is also changed to James Taogoa Kowice.  In George's file, he refers to James as his brother.

Henry W. Smith Student File

Student file of Henry W. Smith, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 16, 1889, and departed on September 26, 1894. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a newspaper clipping, a trade/position record, a returned student survey, letters/correspondence, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving indicating that Smith was farming in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1914.

Note: Some of Henry W. Smith's documents were originally found in the folder of another student; Milton Smith, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 23_folder 1058.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this student file seemed to related to a different student, also named Henry Smith. Those documents have now been included with the Henry Smith file: NARA_RG75_Series 1327_box 153_folder 5990.

Frank Keiser Student File

Student file of Frank Keiser, a member of the Crow Nation, who entered the school on March 31, 1890 and ultimately departed on December 19, 1901. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a trade/position record card, student information cards, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Keiser attended the Indiana Normal School in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 1900 and 1901, was a railroad engineer for the Great Northern Railway in Havre, Montana in 1910, and a railroad engineer in Crow Agency, Montana in 1913.

Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat) Student File

Student file of Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat), a member of the Piegan Nation, who entered the school on March 2, 1893 and ultimately departed on February 8, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains letters/correspondence, an outing record, a progress/conduct card, an application for enrollment, trade/position cards, student information cards, a medical/physical record, a photograph, and a report after leaving.

The report after leaving indicates that Jerome was a laborer Cut Bank, Montana in 1911. Correspondence between Jerome and the school then shows his residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913 and his marriage to former Carlisle student Miss Fannie Charley. Lastly, correspondence between the school and Kennerly family including Jerome indicates that Jerome was a soldier serving on the S.S. Tuscania when it was sunk by the Germans in 1918. Jerome survived and ended up in England with the 158th Aero Squadron.

Chauncey Powlas Student File

Student file of Chauncey Powlas, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 13, 1904 and ultimately departed on October 3, 1913. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, medical/physical records, a former student response postcard, a financial transaction, an application for enrollment, progress/conduct cards, an outing record, a report after leaving, a photograph, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates that Powlas was living in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1913, farming in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1914, and was a soldier stationed at Camp Merrit, New Jersey in 1918.

Note: This student is known in the records as both Chauncey Powlas and Chauncey Powless. Information in other records Powlas first entered the school on Septmeber 21, 1893.

The file indicates Johnson was a farmer in Cherokee, North Carolina in 1910 and 1912.

Note: Students John Aiken and Elizabeth Aiken are probably siblings.

The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, letters/correspondence, a progress/conduct report from the Leaton School District in Leaton, Michigan, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1910 Fisher had married Mary Williams and was a laborer in Leaton, Michigan.

Francis Freemont (The-tha-tha-ga) Student File

Student file of Francis Freemont (The-tha-tha-ga), a member of the Omaha Nation, who entered the school on September 7, 1895, and ultimately departed on October 9, 1906. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, progress/conduct cards from Dickinson College Preparatory School (Conway Hall), a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Freemont was a farmer in Walthill, Nebraska in 1910.

Note: Freemont married fellow student Melinda Cayuga.

David Bird Student File

Student file of David Bird, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 8, 1895 and ultimately departed on April 15, 1917. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, applications for enrollment, medical/physical records, an outing evaluation, a progress/conduct card, a report after leaving, an outing record, financial transactions including credit from the Athletic Association to local merchants, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Bird was on the football team and was transferring to the Charlotte, North Carolina branch of the Ford Motor Company in 1917.

The file indicates that Lyon was a member of the footbal team at Carlisle and was farming in Syracuse, New York in 1911.

Note: in this file the student is identified as Isaac Lyon and Isaac Lyons.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered.
