Justin Head (Rat Head) Student File

Student file of Justin Head, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on February 2, 1884 and departed on March 1, 1892. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, land grants, parole records, an outing evaluation, letters/correspondence concerning Head's parole, a trade/position record card, a medical/physical record, financial transactions, newspaper clippings, a Senate resolution, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Head was living in Florence, Arizona in 1911 and living in Trenton, New Jersey in 1915.

Note: At the time of scanning in the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this folder seemed to relate to a different student, Henry Herrara. Those documents have now been included in the Henry Herrera file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 107_folder 4523.

Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat) Student File

Student file of Jerome Kennerly (The Calf takes a seat), a member of the Piegan Nation, who entered the school on March 2, 1893 and ultimately departed on February 8, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains letters/correspondence, an outing record, a progress/conduct card, an application for enrollment, trade/position cards, student information cards, a medical/physical record, a photograph, and a report after leaving.

The report after leaving indicates that Jerome was a laborer Cut Bank, Montana in 1911. Correspondence between Jerome and the school then shows his residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913 and his marriage to former Carlisle student Miss Fannie Charley. Lastly, correspondence between the school and Kennerly family including Jerome indicates that Jerome was a soldier serving on the S.S. Tuscania when it was sunk by the Germans in 1918. Jerome survived and ended up in England with the 158th Aero Squadron.

Chauncey Powlas Student File

Student file of Chauncey Powlas, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 13, 1904 and ultimately departed on October 3, 1913. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, medical/physical records, a former student response postcard, a financial transaction, an application for enrollment, progress/conduct cards, an outing record, a report after leaving, a photograph, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates that Powlas was living in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1913, farming in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1914, and was a soldier stationed at Camp Merrit, New Jersey in 1918.

Note: This student is known in the records as both Chauncey Powlas and Chauncey Powless. Information in other records Powlas first entered the school on Septmeber 21, 1893.

Student file of David Bird, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on October 8, 1895 and ultimately departed on April 15, 1917. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, applications for enrollment, medical/physical records, an outing evaluation, a progress/conduct card, a report after leaving, an outing record, financial transactions including credit from the Athletic Association to local merchants, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Bird was on the football team and was transferring to the Charlotte, North Carolina branch of the Ford Motor Company in 1917.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, a returned student survey, a position/record card, a former student response postcard, newspaper clippings, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving indicating that Feather was farming in Neopit, Wisconsin in 1911 and farming in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1913.

The file contains student information cards, returned student response postcards, a returned student survey, letters and correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating Smith was working as a dressmaker as well as a housewife in Cherokee, North Carolina in 1913.

Shela Brown Guthrie (Che-ke-kah) Student File

Student file of Shela Brown Guthrie (Che-ke-kah), a member of the Sac & Fox Nation, who entered the school on August 29, 1896 and ultimately departed on May 7, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, medical/physical records, a news clipping, an outing record, a progress/conduct card, a returned student survey, trade/position record card, and a report after leaving indicating that Guthrie was keeping house for her sister and herself in the Sac & Fox Agency, Oklahoma in 1910 and living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1911.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Shela Guthrie Brown, Shelah Guthrie, and Shela B. Guthrie, as well as Che-ke-kah and Chi-ki-ka.

Harriet Jamison Student File

Student file of Harriet Johnson, a member of  the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on August 31, 1897 and ultimately departed on January 23, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a medical/physical record, former student response postcards, a trade/position record card, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Jamison went to the Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1906 on the outing program, graduated from the Warren Emergency Hospital Training School for Nurses in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1909, was a nurse in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1910, and was a nurse at the Jones General Hospital in Jamestown, New York in 1913 and 1915.
