Charles Oheltoint Student File

Student file of Charles Oheltoint, a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on September 10, 1879, and departed on June 29, 1880.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating that Oheltoint was farming in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1914.

Note: Oheltoint also goes by the name Charley Buffalo in the record.

Henry Roman Nose Student File

Student file of Henry Roman Nose, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and departed on September 18, 1883. The file contains newspaper clippings, a letter/correspondence, former student response postcards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving.The file indicates that Roman Nose was farming in Bickford, Oklahoma from 1910 to 1914 and that Roman Nose went on to become Chief of the Cheyennes. The file also indicates that Roman Nose was that Roman Nose was a member of the Fort Marion prisoners group in St. Augustine, Florida before attending the Hampton Institute and eventually Carlisle.

The file indicates Three Stars was the State's Attorney for Bennett County in Martin, South Dakota in 1913.

Note: Although this file does not show it, Blue Teeth was among the first group of students to arrive on October 6, 1879 from the Rosebud agency.

Luther Standing Bear (Kills Plenty) Student File

Student file of Luther Standing Bear, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and departed on July 6, 1885. The file contains a student information card, former student response postcards, news clippings, correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating he was working as a clerk in a store in Sioux City, Iowa in 1913.

Howard Chawip Student File

Student file of Howard Chawip, a member of the Comanche Nation.  No entrance or departure information is given.  The file contains former student response postcards and a report after leaving indicating that, in 1913, Chawip was working as an interpreter at the Reformed Church Mission of Lawton, Oklahoma.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as Howard Chawip and Howard Whitewolf.

Note: Other records show Chawip entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on October 6, 1884.

The file indicates North had married Andrew Tasso, was a housekeeper in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in 1910, and was an assistant matron at the Cheyenne & Arapahoe School in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1913.

Henry North Student File

Student file of Henry North, a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on June 22, 1886. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving. The file indicates North attended the Haskell Institute in 1890 and 1891, was working as an assistant farmer for the government in Bridgeport, Oklahoma in 1910, and as a farmer in Geary, Oklahoma in 1913.

John H. Williams Student File

Student file of John H. Williams, a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on July 1, 1882. The file contains a student information card, returned student survey, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving. According to the information provided he was farming in Canton, Oklahoma with his wife in 1913.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, one document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, William Cohoe. That document has now been included with the William Cohoe file: NARA_1327_box 7_ folder 302.

Harriet Mary Elder Student File

Student file of Harriet Mary Elder, a member of the Nez Perce Nation, who entered the school on February 20, 1880 and departed on August 27, 1886. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey in which she writes about her role as president of the Nez Perce women's missionary society, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Elder was married to James Stuart and living in Kooskia, Idaho, in 1913. The file also contains news clippings from April 1915 in which she writes about her garden and Nez Perce homes.

Note: In this file the student is referred to both as Harriet Elder and under her married name Harriet Stuart.

Student file of John Bull, a member of the Ponca Nation, who entered the school on February 20, 1880 and departed on July 10, 1883. The file contains a student information card, former student response postcard, report after leaving, and returned student survey. The file indicates that Bull was living in White Eagle in 1910 and was a farmer in White Eagle, Oklahoma in 1911 and 1913.

Virginia Ah-quo-yah (To turn back) Student File

Student file of Virginia Ah-quo-yah (To turn back), a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on April 3, 1880 and departed on June 12, 1883. The file includes a student information card, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating Ah-quo-yah was house keeping while living with her husband in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1914.

Note: Virginia was also known as Virginia Stumblingbear and wrote back to the school under her married name, Virginia Sahmaunt.

Student file of Mary Perry, a member of the Pueblo (Laguna) Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880, and ultimately departed on June 28, 1886. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, former student response postcards, a photograph, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating Perry was a housekeeper in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1910 and 1911 and a housewife living in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1913.

John Menual Chaves Student File

Student file of John Menual Chaves (Rays of the Rising Sun), a member of the Pueblo Nation, entered the school on July 31, 1880 and ultimately departed on June 22, 1886. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence, former student response postcards, reports after leaving, and returned student surveys that indicate Chaves was occupied as a farmer and stock raiser.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, John Chaves. Those documents have now been included with the John Chaves file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 129_folder 5122.

Note: In a letter in the file, Chaves notes that while at school he was known as John Menual, but that he now goes by John M. Chaves.
