Edgar Fire Thunder Student File

Student file of Edgar Fire Thunder, a member of the Sioux nation, who enetered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed the school on October 21, 1884. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a student information card, a letter, a trade position/record card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Fire Thunder was an assistant farmer in the Indian Service and a ranchman in Allen, South Dakota in 1911.

Student file of William Spotted Tail (Stays at Home), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879, and departed on June 23, 1880. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, correspondence about returning his land patent, a report after leaving, and a former student response postcard that indicates Spotted Tail was working as a farmer in Cut Meat, South Dakota in 1913.

Henry Roman Nose Student File

Student file of Henry Roman Nose, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and departed on September 18, 1883. The file contains newspaper clippings, a letter/correspondence, former student response postcards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving.The file indicates that Roman Nose was farming in Bickford, Oklahoma from 1910 to 1914 and that Roman Nose went on to become Chief of the Cheyennes. The file also indicates that Roman Nose was that Roman Nose was a member of the Fort Marion prisoners group in St. Augustine, Florida before attending the Hampton Institute and eventually Carlisle.

Luther Standing Bear (Kills Plenty) Student File

Student file of Luther Standing Bear, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and departed on July 6, 1885. The file contains a student information card, former student response postcards, news clippings, correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating he was working as a clerk in a store in Sioux City, Iowa in 1913.

Raymond Stewart Student File

Student file of Raymond Stewart, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879, and ultimately departed on July 8, 1889. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, photographs, letters/correspondence related to the American Indian Association and Stewart's reflection on his time at Carlisle, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Stewart was a painter in Rosebud, South Dakota in 1910 and living in Rosebud, South Dakota in 1912.

Note: In this file the student is identified as both Raymond White Bull and Raymond Stewart.

Note: It is likely that Stewart married fellow student Amy Crowdog.

Daniel Milk (Warrior) Student File

Student file of Daniel Milk (Warrior), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on October 6, 1879 and ultimately departed on July 6, 1885. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence related Milk's decision to not donate to the Alumni Association, a returned student survey, a photograph, and a report after leaving that indicates Milk was a farmer in St. Charles, South Dakota in 1912.

Student file of Alfred Brown (Na'koya'ta), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on April 3, 1883.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a returned student survey, correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating that he was living in Oklahoma between 1910 and 1913, working as an interpreter and evangelist.

Laura Doanmoe Student File

Student file of Laura Doanmoe, a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and ultimately departed on July 8, 1889. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, newspaper clippings, letters/correspondence, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating, Doanmore was a housewife living in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1911.

Note: In the file the student is referred to as Laura Toneadlemah, Laura Doanmore, and Laura Doanmoe.

Student file of Oscar Bull Bear, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and ultimately departed on September 15, 1885.  The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered.  The file contains student information cards, correspondence, and a report after leaving that indicates that he was working as a farmer in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1910.

Mary North Student File

Student file of Mary North, a member of the Arapahoe Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879 and departed on February 26, 1884. The file contains student information cards, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey. The file indicates North had married Andrew Tasso, was a housekeeper in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in 1910, and was an assistant matron at the Cheyenne & Arapahoe School in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1913.

Student file of John Washa (also known as John Washee and Tomahawk), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on October 27, 1879, and departed on July 1, 1882.  The file contains a student information card, a newspaper clipping, correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates that in 1910 he was farming in Clinton, Oklahoma.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file indicates Zadoka was a farmer in Anadarko, Oklahoma from 1907 to 1913.

Virginia Oequa (To turn back) Student File

Student file of Virginia Oequa (To turn back), a member of the Kiowa Nation, who entered the school on April 3, 1880 and departed on June 12, 1883. The file includes a student information card, a former student response postcard, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating Oequa was house keeping while living with her husband in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1914.

Note: Virginia was also known as Virginia Stumblingbear and wrote back to the school under her married name, Virginia Sahmaunt.

Student file of Nellie Carey, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on July 31, 1880, and departed on March 6, 1893.  The file contains student information cards, correspondence, former student response postcards, a news clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that Carey was working as a laundress in Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1915.

John Menual Chaves Student File

Student file of John Menual Chaves (Rays of the Rising Sun), a member of the Pueblo Nation, entered the school on July 31, 1880 and ultimately departed on June 22, 1886. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence, former student response postcards, reports after leaving, and returned student surveys that indicate Chaves was occupied as a farmer and stock raiser.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, John Chaves. Those documents have now been included with the John Chaves file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 129_folder 5122.

Note: In a letter in the file, Chaves notes that while at school he was known as John Menual, but that he now goes by John M. Chaves.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a letter/correspondence, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Whiteshield was a farmer in Watonga, Oklahoma in 1910 and an interpreter in Watonga, Oklahoma in 1912.

Leonard William Tyler (Magpie) Student File

Student file of Leonard William Tyler (Magpie), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 6, 1880 and departed on September 18, 1883. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a returned student survey, news clippings, a report after leaving, and a letter/correspondence. The file indicates that Tyler was given his name at the school by the aunt of former U.S. President John Tyler. Additionally, Tyler worked as a farmer and stock raiser in Calumet, Oklahoma in 1909, 1910, and 1913.

Student file of Sumner Riggs (Red Hat), a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 6, 1880, and departed on December 4, 1884.  The file contains a student information card, correspondence, former student response postcards, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving indicating that he was working as a merchant and farmer in Fay, Oklahoma, from 1910 to 1913.

The file indicates Warden was a farmer in Carlton, Oklahoma in 1910 and 1913.

Student file of Otto Wells, a member of the Comanche Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1880 and departed on July 2, 1891. The file contains a returned student survey, a letter/correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that Wells was farming in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1910.

Michael Burns Student File

Student file of Michael Burns, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on October 26, 1880, and departed on October 6, 1884.  The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a position card, a returned student survey, correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that Burns was working as a farmer in McDowell, Arizona, from 1914 to 1915.  The records also indicate that, in 1910, Burns was a student in the Riverside School of Riverside, California.

Nellie Robertson Student File

Student file of Nellie Robertson, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880 and ultimately departed on July 2, 1896. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a photograph, news clippings, a report after leaving, a financial transaction, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Robertson graduated from the West Chester Normal School in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1896, was a teacher for four years at the Carlisle Indian School, a clerk in the Carlisle Indian School in 1907, the outing manager at the Carlisle Indian School in 1911, and was still working at the school in 1918.

Ahquinimy Neopet Student File

The student file of Ahquinimy Neopet, a member of the Menominee Nation, who entered the school on November 6, 1880 and departed on June 17, 1884. The file contains a returned student survey, a report after leaving, letters/correspondence. The file indicates Neopet was an employment agent and assistant manager for the Menominee Logging Manufacturing operation in 1910 in Keshena, Wisconsin and was a foreman for the Menominee Indian Mills in Neopit, Wisconsin in 1913.

Note: After leaving, Neopet was known as Reginald Oshkosh. He states that he is one of the first students to attend the Carlisle Indian School. Many of the documents in his file relate to the education of his children.
