Johnson Owl Student File

Student file of Johnson Owl, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on March 13, 1896, and departed on July 11, 1903.  The file contains a former student response postcard, correspondence, a newspaper clipping, a returned student survey, a former student survey card, a trade card, and a report after leaving indicating that, from 1910 to 1912, Owl worked as a merchant and farmer in Swagnay, North Carolina.

Student file of Minerva Mitten, a member of the Cayuga Nation, who entered the school on May 1, 1896, graduated in 1902, and departed on February 11, 1902. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a letter/correspondence, and a news clipping. The file indicates that Mitten was working as a housekeeper on the Tuscarora Reservation in New York and working as a farmer in Sanborn, New York in 1912.

Gertrude Jackson Student File

Student file of Gertrude Jackson, a member of the Pima Nation. No arrival or departure dates are given, though Jackson was a member of the graduating class of 1904. The file contains returned student surveys, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that in 1910 Jackson had married Narcha Juan, and was living in Sacaton, Arizona. 

Note: Information in other records shows Jackson arrived on June 21, 1896 and departed on March 1, 1904.

John Arquette Student File

Student file of John Arquette, a member of the Puyallup Nation, who entered the school on July 7, 1896 and departed on July 8, 1897. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicated he was working as a painter in Olympia, Washington in 1910.

Note: Students James Arquette and John Arquette were brothers.

Edwin Smith Student File

Student file of Edwin Smith, a member of the Clallam Nation, a member of the Clallam Nation, who entered the school on July 7, 1896, graduated in 1901, and departed on March 17, 1901. The file contains news clippings, photographs, a former student response postcard, and returned student surveys.

The file indicates that Smith was a member of the Carlisle football team, worked as a steam fitter and assistant engineer for the American Tanners Glue Co. in Gowanda, New York, a fireman and engineer for the Erie Preserving Company in Brant, New York, steam fitting for the Seattle Electric Company in Seattle, Washington, a farmer and steamfitter in Irving, New York in 1907, a disciplinarian at the Salem Indian School in Chemawa, Oregon in 1909, 1911, 1913, and 1914, and was an officer in the Chemawa Battalion in 1914.

Julia Jarvis Student File

Student file of Julia Jarvis, a member of the Okanagan Nation, who entered the school on July 25, 1896, and departed on October 13, 1910. The file contains a student information card, trade/position record cards, an application for enrollment, an outing evaluation, news clippings, outing records, letters/correspondence, and a returned student survey indicating that Jarvis was a domestic in Burlington, New Jersey in 1911 and living in Burlington, New Jersey in 1918.

Pliga Nash Student File

Student file of Pliga Nash, a member of the Winnebago Nation, who entered the school on August 22, 1896, graduated in 1902, and departed on February 11, 1902. The file contains a student information card, a photograph, returned student surveys, former student response postcards, a news clipping, a letter/correspondence, and a report after leaving. The file indicates that Nash was a student in the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas business course from 1906 and graduated from there in 1908, successfully passed the civil service exam for clerk and stenographer and typewriter in 1908, and was living in Crow Agency, Montana in 1915.

Note: This student is known as both Pelagie Nash and Piliga Nash.

The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey that indicates Decora was working as a farmer in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1911. Decora also attended the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas after leaving Carlisle.

The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, news clippings and a report after leaving indicating he was a farmer in Peever, South Dakota in 1910.

Shela Brown Guthrie (Che-ke-kah) Student File

Student file of Shela Brown Guthrie (Che-ke-kah), a member of the Sac & Fox Nation, who entered the school on August 29, 1896 and ultimately departed on May 7, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, medical/physical records, a news clipping, an outing record, a progress/conduct card, a returned student survey, trade/position record card, and a report after leaving indicating that Guthrie was keeping house for her sister and herself in the Sac & Fox Agency, Oklahoma in 1910 and living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1911.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Shela Guthrie Brown, Shelah Guthrie, and Shela B. Guthrie, as well as Che-ke-kah and Chi-ki-ka.

The file indicates Smith was living in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1907 and a farmer in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1914.

Guy Jones (Hepan) Student File

Student file of Guy Jones (Hepan), a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on August 27, 1897, and departed on June 28, 1900. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, a news clipping about his appointment as Industrial Teacher at the Wild Rice River Boarding school, and a report after leaving indicating he was working for the Indian Service in Standing Rock, North Dakota, in 1911.

Note: Although the student file does not reflect it, other records indicate Jones was a graduate in the Class of 1900.

Student file of Agnes Picotte, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on August 27, 1897 and departed on November 20, 1899. The file contains correspondence, a news clipping, a student information card, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, and a report after leaving indicating she was working as a housekeeper in Greenwood, South Dakota in 1910.

Melissa Cornelius Student File

Student file of Melissa Cornelius, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 28, 1897, and ultimately departed on June 30, 1907. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, an application for enrollment, a report after leaving, and a former student response postcard indicating that in 1913 she was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The file also contains letters and correspondence between Melissa and the school, and Melissa and her family members. A number of the letters discuss her purchasing a ticket for a football game at the school, while in others she inquires about her sister's health.

Casper Cornelius Student File

Student file of Casper Cornelius, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 28, 1897 and ultimately departed on July 18, 1907. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a photograph of the mill where Cornelius worked, a report after leaving, a former student response postcards, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Cornelius attended the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma and operated a restaurant in Bucklin, Kansas in 1916.

Solomon Day Student File

Student file of Solomon Day, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on August 29, 1897 and departed on September 16, 1902. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, a letter/correspondence, a news clipping, a trade/position record card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Day worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1912 and was living in Gallup, New Mexico in 1915.

Note: Day married fellow student Katie Creager.

Walter Marmon Student File

Student file of Walter Marmon, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on August 29, 1897, and departed on January 31, 1900. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, and a returned student survey that indicates Marmon was working as a stockman in Laguna, New Mexico in 1911.
