Note: Clark married a Peter W. Thomas, who was not the Peter Thomas who also attended the school.

Edward Peters Student File

Student file of Edward Peters, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on August 7, 1889, graduated in 1899, and ultimately departed on August 7, 1899. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a news clipping, student information cards, a returned student survey, a former student response postcard, a trade/position record, letters/correspondence about his daughter and other students he recommended to attend Carlisle, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Peters was a farmer and barber in Rose Bush, South Dakota in 1907 and working as a fireman and engineer in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in 1911.

Note: in this file the student is identified as Edward W. Peters and Edward W. Peters.

Rosa Bourassa Student File

Student file of Rosa Bourassa, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on August 7, 1889, graduated in 1890, and departed on February 25, 1892. The file contains a student information card, returned student survey, photographs, news clippings, a report after leaving, letters/correspondence, and a trade/position record card. The file indicates Bourassa was a teacher in various schools in the Indian Service including the Carlisle Indian School, the Fort Hall Indian School, and Phoenix Indian School; an assistant matron at the Carlisle Indian School, corresponding secretary of the American Indian Association, clerk of the outing system at the Carlisle Indian School in 1913 and 1914, and an office assistant for the Society of American Indians in Washington D.C. in 1914.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a trade/position record card, a former student response postcard, a report after leaving, returned student surveys, a news clipping, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Gruett was a disciplinarian at the Mt. Pleasant School in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan from 1907 to 1911 and a farmer in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in 1913.

Student file of Henry W. Smith, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 16, 1889, and departed on September 26, 1894. The file contains a student information card, a former student response postcard, a newspaper clipping, a trade/position record, a returned student survey, letters/correspondence, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving indicating that Smith was farming in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1914.

Note: Some of Henry W. Smith's documents were originally found in the folder of another student; Milton Smith, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 23_folder 1058.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, several documents in this student file seemed to related to a different student, also named Henry Smith. Those documents have now been included with the Henry Smith file: NARA_RG75_Series 1327_box 153_folder 5990.

Emanuel Powlas Student File

Student file of Emanuel Powlas, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1889 and departed on March 12, 1900. The file contains a former student response post card, a trade/position record card, returned student surveys, letters/correspondence, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that after his time in Carlisle, Powlas served in the Army during the Spanish-American war, married Lydia Wheelock, farmed in West DePere, Wisconsin and served as the Town Clerk of Oneida in 1917.

Note: In this file the student is referred to by the given names Emanuel and Emmanuel, and by the surnames Powless, Powles, Powlass, and Powlas.

Note: One of Emanuel Powlas' documents was originally found filed at the U.S. National Archives in the folder of another student; Purcell Powlas, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 147_folder 5703.

James R. Wheelock Student File

Student file of James R. Wheelock, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1889 and ultimately departed on June 30, 1897. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, financial transactions, a photograph, returned student survey, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Wheelock was the bandmaster and assistant printer at the Carlisle Indian School for five years, was the proprietor and conductor of Wheelock's Concert Band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1907 to 1910, and the conductor of the Hagerstown Municipal Band in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1917.

Benjamin Caswell Student File

Student file of Benjamin Caswell, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 9, 1889, graduated in 1892, and ultimately departed on June 10, 1895. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a trade/position record card, photographs, a financial transaction, news clippings, returned student surveys, former student response surveys, letters/correspondence, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates Caswell was the first captain of the Carlisle football team in 1892, attended the Dickinson College Prepatory School, was principal teacher in charge of the Cass Lake Indian School in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1907, superintendent of the Cass Lake Indian School and Special Distribution Agent in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1909, and overseer on timber matters in Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1912.

Note: Caswell married fellow student Leila Cornelius.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, a document in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Benjamin F. Caswell. That document has now been included with the Benjamin F. Caswell file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 123_folder_4941.

Nina Carlisle Student File

Student file of Nina Carlisle, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 15, 1889, and ultimately departed on June 21, 1909. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a newspaper clipping, letters and correspondence, and a report after leaving indicating Carlisle had been working as a domestic in Beverly, New Jersey in 1910 before becoming a housewife and moving to Wichita, Kansas in 1911. 

Note: Nina Carlisle was almost certainly the daughter of student Thomas Carlisle, who was enrolled at the time of Nina formally entered the school.

William Hazlett Student File

Student file of William Hazlett, a member of the Blackfeet nation. No entrance or departure date is given. The file contains photographs, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Hazlett was a farmer, politician, and editor of the Fort Cobb Record, in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma in 1910 and was in the real estate business in Aberdeen, Washington in 1911.

Note: Information in other record shows Hazlett was a member of the Piegan nation who arrived on March 26, 1890, graduated in 1895, and departed on March 12, 1895.

Note: Buck married fellow student Spyna Devereaux.

The file contains a student information card, returned student surveys, letters/correspondence, a news clipping, and a report after leaving.

The file indicates Choteau attended the Indiana Normal School in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1895, the Bryant and Stratton Business College in Chicago, Illinois, and Mr. Tanner's School for Civil Service Examination in Washington, D. C.; was a typewriter for the Loan and Currency division of the Treasury Department in Washington D. C.; a housewife in Chafey, Nevada in 1909; and living in San Francisco, California in 1911.
