Frank Paisano Student File

Student file of Frank Paisano, a member of the Queres Nation, who entered the school on August 24, 1884, and departed on July 8, 1889. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, correspondence, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey that indicates Paisano was working as a farmer and stock raiser in Laguna, New Mexico in 1911. Paisano was also elected Governor of the Pueblo of Laguna.

The file indicates Leeds was a stock raiser and farmer in Seama, New Mexico in 1907, a pottery worker in Laguna, New Mexico in 1910, and was farming and raising stock in Seama, New Mexico in 1912.

The file contains a student information card, correspondence, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a news clipping, and former student response postcards that indicate Paisano was working as a postmaster and a dealer in general merchandise in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1912.

Maria Analla Student File

Student file of Maria Analla, a member of the Queres Nation, who entered the school on August 24, 1884 and departed on July 8, 1889. The file contains a student information card, a returned student survey, a photograph, newspaper clippings, and a report after leaving indicating Analla was married to former student Robert Marmon and living in Laguna, New Mexico in 1910.

Note: The file contains a newspaper article referring to a visit to the home of Robert Marmon and his wife (Maria Analla). The article also refers to former Carlisle student Maria Iteye, who may be Maria Etiva. 

Note: Students Maria Analla and Walter Analla were probably siblings.

Minnie Kennedy Student File

Student file of Minnie Kennedy, a member of the Osage Nation, who entered the school on September 26, 1884 and departed on August 12, 1885. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey from 1911 in which Kennedy writes about her farm outside of Tulsa in Turley, Oklahoma.

James Taogoa Kowice Student File

Student file of James Taogoa Kowice, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 18, 1884 and ultimately departed on June 23, 1909. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a trade/position card, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Kowice was working for a lumber company in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1910, a farmer in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1911 and was working as a storekeeper in Gallup, New Mexico in 1912.

Note: The file indicates that the student first entered the school as James Kary Taogoa with one living parent. When he reentered the school in 1904 both parents were deceased and George Kowice Analla (a former Carlisle student) is listed as his home address. His name is also changed to James Taogoa Kowice.  In George's file, he refers to James as his brother.

Alexander Yellow Wolf Student File

Student file of Alexander Yellow Wolf, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on September 12, 1885 and departed on July 29, 1890. The file contains returned student surveys, a news clipping and a report after leaving indicating that Yellow Wolf was a police officer in Kyle, South Dakota in 1910.

Sophia Metoxen Student File

Student file of Sophia Metoxen, a member of the Oneida Nation, who reentered the school on October 8, 1893 and departed on April 12, 1897. The original date of entry is not included in this file. The file contains a student information card, news clippings, a report after leaving, a returned student survey in which she writes about her children, and letters and correspondence between her and the school where she writes at length about her family and sending her daughter to Carlisle. The file also contains former student response postcards indicating that in 1914 she was living in West DePere, Wisconsin and working as an agent for a Chicago based jewelry company.

Note: Other records show Metoxen's original date of entry was September 30, 1885

James Hiowa (Hi-o-wa) Student File

Student file of James Hiowa (Hi-o-wa), a member of the Queres Nation, who entered the school October 4, 1885 and departed July 21, 1892. The file contains a student information card, letters/correspondence, a returned student survey, former student response postcards, a news clipping, and a report after leaving which indicates that Hiowa was working as a "car repairer helper" in Gallup, New Mexico in 1914.

Roy Sice (Si-as-chee) Student File

Student file of Roy Sice (Si-as-chee), a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 4, 1885 and departed on July 2, 1891. The file contains a student information card, a letter/correspondence, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving that indicates Sice was working as a surveyor in the Indian Service in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1910.

Note: In this file the student is identified as Si-as-chee, Si-as-che, and Roy Sice.

Martin D. Archiquette Student File

Student file of Martin D. Archiquette, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1885, graduatd in 1891, and departed on October 8, 1893. The file contains former student response postcards, a trade/position record card, a student information card, a photograph, a news clipping, returned student surveys, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Archiquette was a disciplinarian and band leader at the Indian School in Fort Simcoe, Washington in 1907 and 1910, overseer of Indian employment at Rocky Ford, Colorado, and superintendent of Grand Portage, Minnesota in 1915.

Julia Powlas Student File

Student file of Julia Powlas, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1885, graduated in 1889, and departed on July 8, 1889. The file contains a student information card, returned student surveys, a report after leaving, a news clipping, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Powlas was a laundress in Morris, Minnesota in 1909, and was an assistant matron in the Indian Service in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1911.

Edwin Schanandore Student File

Student file of Edwin Schanandore, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1885, graduated in 1889, and departed on July 16, 1892. The file contains returned student surveys, a news clipping, photographs, a student information cards, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Schanandore was a disciplinarian and band master in the Indian Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1907 and was living in Flandreau, South Dakota in 1917.

Seward, a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who entered the school on September 21, 1886, and departed on February 12, 1890.  The file contains a student information card, a photograph, a newspaper clipping, a report after leaving, and returned student surveys that indicate Seward was working as a farmer in Fay, Oklahoma in 1911.

Frank Hudson Student File

Student file of Frank Hudson, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 3, 1886, graduated in 1896, and departed on March 31, 1897. The file contains news clippings, a trade/position record card, a student information card, financial transactions, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Hudson was a quarterback and kicker on the Carlisle football team as well as being a captain on the basketball and baseball teams, a financial clerk at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was farming on shares in Wycombe, Pennsylvania in 1911, and was in the advertising business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917.

Vincent Natalish (Nah-tail-eh) Student File

Student file of Vincent Natalish (Nah-tail-eh), a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on April 30, 1887, graduated in 1899,and departed on March 11, 1899. The file contains a trade/position record, newspaper clippings, a former student response postcard, a student information card, a returned student survey, letters/correspondence about his son's enrollment at Carlisle, and a report after leaving indicating. The file indicates Natalish was working as an engineer in New York, New York in 1907, as a civil engineer in New York, New York in 1910, Supervisor of Indian Schools in New York City in 1914, and was living in New York, New York in 1915 and 1918.

Note: The student in this file is identified as Vincent Natailsh and Vincent Natailish.

Jason Betzinez (Bet-zin-ez) Student File

Student file of Jason Betzinez, a member of the Apache Nation, who entered the school on April 30, 1887, and departed on May 5, 1897.  The file contains student information cards, a position card, correspondence, a returned student survey, a newspaper clipping, and a report after leaving indicating that, in 1910, Betzinez was working as a Blacksmith for the Cheyenne Agency in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Levi St. Cyr Student File

Student file of Levi St. Cyr, a member of the Winnebago Nation, who entered the school on August 5, 1887, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on June 30, 1893. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains photographs, student information cards, returned student surveys, news clippings, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates St. Cyr was a member of the band at Carlisle, an assistant printer and foreman at the Carlisle Indian School from 1891 to 1899, an assistant clerk and acting interpreter at the Winnebago Indian Agency in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1907, leasing clerk at the Winnebago Agency in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1910, and was appointed overseer of Indian Employment at Garden City, Kansas.

The file contains a returned student survey, a news clipping, a student information card and a report after leaving indicating he was an assistant mechanic in Pine Ridge, South Dakota in 1911.

Robert Horse Student File

Student file of Robert Horse, a member of the Sioux nation, who entered the school on August 12, 1887 and departed on April 30, 1894. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, and a report after leaving. The documents indicate that he was living near Kyle, South Dakota with his wife and two children while working to farm his allotment, doing church work, and participating in the Y.M.C.A. in 1912.

James Kawaykla (Kaway-kla) Student File

Student file of James Kawaykla, a member of the Apache Nation who entered the school on September 30, 1887 and departed on August 1, 1898. The file contains student information card, newspaper clippings, and a report after leaving, and news clippings regarding Kawaykla's involvement in a delegation of Fort Sill Apaches debating a removal to the Mescalero Reservation. The file indicates Kawaykla served as an Indian Scout in Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1910.

Charles E. Dagenett Student File

Student file of Charles E. Dagenett, a member of the Peoria Nation, who entered the school on November 15, 1887, graduated in 1891, and ultimately departed on December 14, 1891. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, photographs, returned student surveys, a report after leaving, and letters/correspondence.

The file indicates Dagenett attended Dickinson College in 1891; graduated from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York; was the Supervisor of Indian Employment in Denver, Colorado in 1910; executive committee chairman of the American Indian Association in 1911; and was the Supervisor of Indian Employment at the Indian Office in Washington, D. C. in 1915.

Note: Dagenett married fellow student Esther Miller.

Thomas A. Skenandore Student File

Student file of Thomas A Skenandore, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on March 23, 1888 and ultimately departed on May 18, 1896. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains two student information cards, a newspaper clipping, a returned student survey, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Skenandore was farming in West De Pere, Wisconsin in 1910 and was the second American Indian to serve in the United States Navy.

Note: In the file the student is identifed as Thomas A. Skenandore and William Schenandoah, and Thomas Schanandore.

Sarah Archiquette Student File

Student file of Sarah Archiquette, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on June 22, 1888, and departed on July 4, 1893. The file contains a student information card, a report after leaving, a returned student survey, a news clipping, and former student response postcards indicating that in 1913 she was working and living in Flandreau, South Dakota. The file also contains letters and correspodence to the school from 1914 where she writes that she is now living in West De Pere, Wisconsin and wishes to send her children to Carlisle.

Note: In this file the student writes back to the school under her married name Sarah Archiquette Cornelius.
