Alfred DeGrasse Student File

Student file of Alfred DeGrasse, a member of the Wampanoag Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1904, graduated in 1911, and ultimately departed on May 5, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains trade/position record cards, news clippings, returned student surveys, student information cards, medical/physical records, an application for enrollment, letters/correspondence, a report after leaving, an outing record, and progress/conduct cards.

The file indicates he stayed in Carlisle through 1913 and was applying for a job at Baldwin Locomotive Works, but living in New Bedford, Massachusetts as of July 1915. The file also mentions that he was the grandson of Watson F. Hammond, the first Native American to sit in the Massachusetts State Legislature.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as both Alfred DeGrasse and Alfred De Grasse.

The file indicates Penny won first prize for a display of cabbages at a county fair in Lewiston, Idaho in 1909, was a farmer in Kooskia, Idaho in 1909 and 1910 and stock raising in Kooskia, Idaho in 1913.

Note: This student went by the last name Bureau after leaving Carlisle. Some of David Bero's documents were originally found in the folder of another student; Thomas Bear, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 43_folder 2128.

The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file includes student information cards, an application for enrollment, letters/correspondence, a returned student survey, a report after leaving, a progress/conduct card, an outing record, a trade/position record card, and newspaper clippings. The file indicates that Fisher painted for the government.

Note: This student's name appears to have originally been Charles Longfish (as on his application), but at the school they seem to have called him Charles Fish or Charles L. Fish. He is also known as Charles Fisher, Charles Fisch, Charly Long Fish, and Charley Longfish.

Mary Amera Student File

The file also contains a returned student survey from 1911 indicating she was living in Fort Lapwai, Idaho and had attended Fort Lapwai Highschool after leaving Carlisle.

Note: In this file the student's name appears as Marry Amera, Harriet Amera, and Mary Amier.

Note: Other documentation states that Mary Amerca later married former student Caleb Carter.
