Jesse Powlas Student File

Student file of Jesse Powlas, a member of the Onondaga Nation, who entered the school on August 30, 1904, and departed on June 23, 1909.  The file contains a student information card, a physical record, a progress card, and a newspaper clipping.  The records indicate that Powlas came to Carlisle from the Haskell Institute, and went on three outings while at Carlisle.

William Gardner Student File

Student file of William Gardner, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 4, 1904 and ultimately departed on July 21, 1908. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, letters/correspondence, newspaper clippings, a photograph, and a report after leaving indicating that Gardner was on the football team while at school, received a diploma in law from Dickinson College, and was a Captain in Co. H of the 338 Infantry in the United States Army stationed at Camp Custer, Michigan in 1917.

Ralph Waterman Student File

Student file of Ralph Waterman, a member of the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on September 14, 1904, and departed on March 29, 1909. The file contains a student information card, a news clipping, a trade/position record card, a progress/conduct card, a returned student survey, correspondence,and a report after leaving that indicates Waterman was living in Tacoma, Washington in 1913. Waterman's correspondence is related to his request for assistance in getting a job at the Ford Motor Company, whether he could attend commencement week exercises, and on the school's alumni association.

Note: Waterman married fellow student Laura Bertrand.

Student file of Edmund Venne, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on September 24, 1904, and departed on September 20, 1909.  The file contains a student information card, a progress card, a newspaper clipping, a returned student survey, former student response postcards, correspondence, a student outing record, and a report after leaving indicating that Venne was a student at schools in Chilocco, Oklahoma, and Lawrence, Kansas, between 1910 and 1914.

The file indicates Long was a farmer in the Indian Service in Lower Brule, South Dakota in 1914 and a farmer for the government in Blackrock, New Mexico as of 1914.

The file contains letters/correspondence, financial transactions, an outing evaluation, news clippings, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, medical/physical records, applications for enrollment, student information cards, progress/conduct cards, a report after leaving, and an outing record. The file indicates that Cabay was the Boy's Assistant Matron at the Mt. Pleasant Indian School in 1911 until she left in 1912 and was living in Bay City, Michigan in 1914.

Judson Cabay (Pe-zon-ge-zhig) Student File

Student file of Judson Cabay (Pe-zon-ge-zhig), a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on October 8, 1904 and ultimately departed on February 8, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, news clippings, a financial transaction, letters/correspondence, a returned student survey, progress/conduct cards, a trade/position record card, medical/physical records, an application for enrollment, an outing evaluation, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Cabay was a farmer in West Bay City, Michigan in 1911 before joining the movie industry and the 101 wild west show in Venice, California and Ocean Park, California in 1912.

Cabay is noted to have entered the Los Angeles to Venice Marathon. He had held the Carlisle record for the ten mile distance at 54 minutes and had also competed in 15 mile and full marathon distances as well as winning races in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Bay City, Michigan.

Alfred DeGrasse Student File

Student file of Alfred DeGrasse, a member of the Wampanoag Nation, who entered the school on November 7, 1904, graduated in 1911, and ultimately departed on May 5, 1911. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains trade/position record cards, news clippings, returned student surveys, student information cards, medical/physical records, an application for enrollment, letters/correspondence, a report after leaving, an outing record, and progress/conduct cards.

The file indicates he stayed in Carlisle through 1913 and was applying for a job at Baldwin Locomotive Works, but living in New Bedford, Massachusetts as of July 1915. The file also mentions that he was the grandson of Watson F. Hammond, the first Native American to sit in the Massachusetts State Legislature.

Note: In this file the student is referred to as both Alfred DeGrasse and Alfred De Grasse.
