James Taogoa Kowice Student File

Student file of James Taogoa Kowice, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on October 18, 1884 and ultimately departed on June 23, 1909. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains student information cards, a returned student survey, a trade/position card, a former student response postcard, a news clipping, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Kowice was working for a lumber company in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1910, a farmer in Casa Blanca, New Mexico in 1911 and was working as a storekeeper in Gallup, New Mexico in 1912.

Note: The file indicates that the student first entered the school as James Kary Taogoa with one living parent. When he reentered the school in 1904 both parents were deceased and George Kowice Analla (a former Carlisle student) is listed as his home address. His name is also changed to James Taogoa Kowice.  In George's file, he refers to James as his brother.

Chiltoski Nick Student File

Student file for Chiltoski Nick, a member of the Cherokee Nation, who entered the school on March 13, 1896, and ultimately departed the school on March 22, 1905. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains three student information cards indicating that Chiltoski, who also went by the nickname Tossie, graduated with the class of 1905.

Note: These student information cards were found in the student file of Bessie Nick, a sister of Chiltoski. Minnie Nick is another sister of Chiltoski.

Jacob Taylor Student File

Student File of Jacob Taylor, a member of the Seneca Nation, who entered the school on September 13, 1898 and ultimately departed on April 2, 1908. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains returned student survey, trade/position record cards, student information cards, and a report after leaving indicating that Taylor was working as a farmer in Salamanca, New York in 1910.

Preston Ogle Student File

Student file of Preston Ogle, a member of the Pima Nation, who entered the school on August 7, 1899 and departed on June 29, 1904. The file contains a student information card, a report after leaving, and a returned student survey. The file indicates Ogle was a farmer in Scottsdale, Arizona as of 1910.

Student file of Samuel Cook, a member of the Nez Perce Nation, who entered the school on December 14, 1903, and departed on June 23, 1909. The file contains a student information card, progress/conduct card, a trade/position record card, a returned student survey, an application for enrollment, and a report after leaving that indicates Cook was working as a farmer in Kamiah, Idaho in 1910.

Ambrose Miguel Student File

Student file of Ambrose Miguel, a member of the Yuma Nation, who entered the school on October 19, 1904 and departed on May 11, 1909. The file contains a student information card, news clippings, a returned student survey, a medical/physical record, a progress/conduct card, and a report after leaving. The file indicates Miguel was a store clerk in Yuma, Arizona in 1910.

St. Elmo Jim Student File

Student file of St. Elmo Jim, a member of the Pawnee Nation, who entered the college August 24, 1905 and departed June 22, 1910. The file contains letters/correspondence, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, a student information card, former student response postcards, returned student survey, news clippings, trade/position record cards, a progress/conduct card, an outing record, and a report after leaving which indicates that Jim was working as a farmer in Pawnee, Oklahoma in 1913.

Harrison Smith Student File

Student file of Harrison Smith, a member of the Oneida Nation, who entered the school on September 3, 1905 and departed on May 21, 1911. The file contains a student information card, applications for enrollment, a medical/physical record, trade/position record cards, returned student survey, a progress/conduct card, an outing record, a report after leaving, an outing evaluation, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates that Smith went on a trip to Philadelphia with the school band, was working as an Industrial teacher and disciplinarian at the boarding school in Oneida, Wisconsin in 1914 and 1915.

Note: Information in other records indicates Smith re-enrolled and graduated in 1913.

Sampson Burd Student File

Student file of Sampson Burd, a member of the Piegan Nation, who entered the school on December 21, 1907 and ultimately departed on November 1, 1912. The student did not attend the school continuously, but left and reentered. The file contains a medical/physical record, student information cards, a trade/position record card, a newspaper clipping, progress/conduct cards, progress/conduct cards from Dickinson College Preparatory School (Conway Hall), an application for enrollment, and a report after leaving indicating that Burd was farming in Browning, Montana in 1911.

Note: Burd married fellow student Margaret Blackwood, but she died shortly after their marriage. He subsequently married another former student, Margaret Burgess.

Charles Williams Student File

Student file of Charles Williams, a member of the Caddo Nation, who entered the school on September 13, 1908 and departed on June 16, 1913. The file contains a student information card, a trade/position record card, a progress/conduct card, outing evaluations, financial transactions, an outing record, an application for enrollment, a medical/physical record, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Williams played football while attending Carlisle and attended the Haskell Institute at Lawrence, Kansas in 1914 and 1915.

Note: One of Charles Williams documents was originally found in the folder of another student; James P. Shemamy, NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 93_folder 4142.

Jose Montoya Student File

Student file of Jose Montoya, a member of the Pueblo Nation, who entered the school on December 19, 1910 and departed on June 8, 1914. The file contains an application for enrollment, a student information card, a medical/physical record, outing evaluations, a news clipping, an outing record, financial transactions, a progress/conduct card, and letters/correspondence. The file indicates Montoya was living in Chamita, New Mexico and Sante Fe, New Mexico and enrolled in the Sherman Institute in Riverside, California in 1914.

Note: At the time of scanning at the U.S. National Archives, one of the documents in this student file seemed to relate to a different student, Josefeta Montoya. That document has now been included with the Josefeta Montoya file: NARA_RG 75_Series 1327_box 58_folder 2928.

Alex Roy Student File

Student file of Alex Roy, a member of the Chippewa Nation, who entered the school on January 26, 1914, graduated in 1917, and departed on June 12, 1917. The file contains a student information card, an application for enrollment, a physical record, outing evaluations, financial transactions, letters/correspondence, an outing record, and certificates of promotion. The files indicate that after graduating Roy returned home to Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Andrew S. Condon Student File

Student file of Andrew S. Condon, a member of the Sioux Nation, who entered the school on August 25, 1915, and departed on May 16, 1917. The file contains student information cards, an application for enrollment, financial transactions, medical/physical records, an outing record, progress/conduct cards from Dickinson College Preparatory School (Conway Hall), a federal financial aid form, and correspondence. The files indicates Condon was living in Cherry Creek, South Dakota in 1917.
